[Ab] [Bbm]
[Ab] [Bbm] [Eb] [N] Hey everybody, welcome back.
In today's lesson I'm going to be discussing a fingerpicking technique called the Travis Picking pattern.
And what I really love about fingerpicking is how it really opens up the ukulele and
really brings a lot of life to the chords.
So let me give you guys a quick example here of what this pattern sounds [C] like.
[Am]
[F]
[Dm] [G] [C]
[Am]
[F] [Dm]
[G] [C]
Alright first things first before you start fingerpicking, we want to make sure that our
hand is in good position here.
So the first thing I do before I even start picking the strings [N] is I take my pinky finger
and I place it right below the sound hole here.
And that's going to anchor my hand so that my hand doesn't lift on and off of the strings
when I'm trying to fingerpick.
So take your pinky finger, straighten it out, and then lower your right hand down so that
your fingers can be curled as they grab the strings.
So the pattern of the Travis Picking pattern here is going to go inside strings to outside strings.
So the first move is [C] thumb on the C string.
[Db] So what I like to do is I like to grab the C string with my thumb, the E string with
my index, and the A string with my middle finger.
So I've got all three of these strings and when I'm plucking the strings I'm actually
just taking my [E] finger and kind of pulling it into my palm.
So it's a nice short concise movement here.
[C] You don't really want your fingers up like this, you want them nice and curled with your
arm resting on the ukulele and once again your pinky securing your hand down here.
So let's start the pattern here.
So the pattern is thumb on the C string, [Em] index on the E string, [G] thumb on the G string, [Dm] and
middle [C] on the A string.
So inside strings to outside strings.
Thumb, index, thumb, [Am] middle.
[C] Thumb, index, thumb, [Am] middle.
So when you [C] speed that pattern up a little bit, here's what it sounds like.
[Am]
And I'll note that I'm not holding down any chords at the moment, this is just open strings
and when you first start doing the finger picking technique, that's the best way to
start is just [G] to solely focus on your right hand.
I'll also note that it's a good idea to watch your right hand when you first start this
pattern and really make sure that you're using nice, [C] short, concise movements [Am] and [F] keeping
your pinky down on the base of the ukulele.
So now we're going to take a look at playing this with a couple of different chords.
So grab your ukulele, we're going to do a little play along here after you take some
time to practice this technique on your own.
Okay, now that you've had a chance to practice the finger picking pattern without any chords,
we're going to show you how to incorporate a few simple chords here into the finger picking technique.
So to start, we're going to do a really simple pattern here where we're just going to descend
from a [C] C chord to a C major 7 chord to a C7 chord and then finally [Am]
an open C6 chord.
[N] So place your fingers on the first, second and third frets simultaneously on the A string.
With your right hand, plant your pinky on the instrument and grab your strings C, E
and A and you're ready to go.
So we're going to play this pattern four times on each chord.
So after you play the pattern, you're going to release one finger with your left hand.
So let me do a quick demonstration and then we'll go through it slowly [F] so you can play
along with me at home.
One, two, three, [C] four.
[E] Okay, so grab your ukulele, put your index finger, middle and ring finger down on the
A string on frets one, two, three.
Get in good playing position here with your right hand and let's play [N] this one together.
So four times through the pattern on each chord.
So after every four times you play this finger picking pattern, you're going to lift a finger.
So here we go.
One, two, three, [C] four.
[Am]
So [Abm] now the same thing again and I'm going to bump the tempo up a little bit to give
you guys a little better feel for what this finger picking pattern can sound like when
you play it with a little bit more pace.
So if you're not ready for the speed yet, don't worry, just stick with the slower pattern
and really work on your technique, making sure [C] that you're getting each string to ring
nice and clear and you're getting a nice even tone [B] throughout the pattern.
So let's take it with a little bit more speed here.
One, [C] two, three, four.
Alright, so in [N] today's lesson we discussed the Travis picking pattern of finger picking.
So finger picking can be used in a lot of ways.
This is the first pattern that I like to teach people.
It's very basic but can be really cool if you use it the right way.
So let me give you a quick example here [Bb] of how Brown Eyed Girl would sound if I were
to play it with this Travis picking pattern.
[C]
[F]
[C] [G]
[C] Hey where did [F] we go?
[C] Days [G] when the rains came.
[C] Down in the [F] hollow, [C] playing [G] a new game.

middle [C] on the A string.
