[Eb] Hey guys and welcome back.
We're not in the music room today because it's
nighttime and everybody's sleeping.
So we're down in the basement which is a
nice great little studio location and we're gonna do a special song called
In the Shape of a Heart by Jackson Browne.
[Eb] It wasn't anything that anybody
requested but it's a special shout out to the person who taught me how to play
guitar 30 years ago.
Oh my god.
And who I hope will watch it and enjoy the tune.
I'm gonna delve right into it because it's a long process and we only have 10
minutes to get it done.
So the first thing we're gonna need to do is we're
gonna retune the guitar.
I want you to pause after I give you the tuning,
retune, and then come right back and we'll jump right in.
So here's our tuning.
We are in [Bb] open D [Ebm] flat tuning and the chords of the notes are D flat, A flat, D
flat, F, A flat, D flat.
Again D flat, A flat, D flat, F, A flat, D flat.
Now as
you'll note this is just open D tuning but it's tuned down a half a step to
play with Jackson on the record.
Normal open D tuning as we've done a million
times is D, A, D, F sharp, A, D.
[Db] Here's our chords [Ebm] and I know I'm going a little bit
quick.
Oh I'm sorry stop the video now, go and retune, and pause me and then come
back.
Okay now you should be back and tuned into open D flat which means that
that's a D flat.
[Eb] [Bbm]
This is a B flat minor [Bb] and I'm at frets open, [B] two, open, open, two,
open.
[Bbm]
And Jackson [Eb] also plays that same chord up here at fret number nine by
holding down the top two strings.
[B] The next chord is going to be a G which he
can play [Eb] here as an E7 position.
It's G in open D tuning or G flat because we're
a half a step down [Gb] or it can be played just by barring it fret five.
[Eb] And then
the last chord [Abm] is an A sustained.
[B] Again it's an A flat sustained because we're
on a half step.
[Gb] [Ab]
So let me [Eb] just show you the song how it lays out and then we're
actually going to put Jackson on in the background and play along with him for a
second.
[Db]
It's got a little shuffle beat to it that seems [F] to continue through the
[Eb] whole song.

going to put Jackson on in the background and play along with him.
[Abm] I may
not do the riffs because I may just play through them with the chords just so I
don't mess up your timing and my [B] timing and he's better than I am.
What can I say?
Let's see how this works.
We're not going to get through the whole song because we
only have four minutes left but we'll give it a shot.

Alright, we're going to [Ab] turn Jackson off here.
_ _ _ [E] There he goes.
[Bb] So hopefully you guys got something out of that.
It's a really, really fun song.
It's only really got four chords.
And if you can learn how to do what Jackson does so well,
you can really pick out
those melody lines [Db] anywhere.
_ [Bbm] _ _ _ _ _ _
[Db] _ _ _ _ [Ab] And it doesn't matter if you get the exact note,
you've got the theme.

[Eb] _ [Bbm] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [Gb] _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ _
[Gb] _ _ _ _ [E] Alright, anyway,
that was a great nine minutes.
So once again, special shout out to the person
who changed my life by teaching me how to play guitar in 1978. _
Oh my god, that's a long time ago.
And hope you guys [Bb] enjoy it.
Any questions, feel free to
ping me an email.
And I look forward to getting more of your requests
this weekend.
Spring is only
three weeks away.
See you soon
