What's up guys?
Groovy Guitar Dude [F] here with the beginner guitar lesson for I'm With You by Vance Joy.
If this video helps you out
hit that [G] like and subscribe button and let me know in the comments below what other songs from Vance Joy that you want to learn
on guitar.
The first thing you want to know for I'm With You is the five chords
we need to play this song.
The first one is G, the next one is C add 9,
the [Em] next one is E minor,
the next one is [D] D, and
the last one [E] is A minor.
[Am] And I'll have chord charts for [G] all of those in the comments below for those of you who need them.
The next thing you need to know is the picking pattern that we're gonna be playing throughout this whole entire song.
I'm gonna go ahead and do finger picking to make it easier for you guys to see what I'm doing.
I also think it sounds better finger picked, but you can absolutely use a pick if you're more comfortable with that.
So I'm gonna use a G chord as an example.
Our picking pattern is gonna be bass note,
G, B,
high E, B,
G for each chord.
So the only thing that's gonna change is that bass note.
If you're not familiar with what bass notes are,
the bass note is just the lowest note of each chord.
So for that, for the G [E] and the E minor,
[D] that's gonna be on your low E string.
For your C and your A minor,
that's gonna be on the A string.
And for your D chord, that's gonna be on the D string.
The only thing that's gonna change in that picking [Eb] progression is [Abm] the bass note.
So [G] it's just gonna be your bass note,
G, B, E, B, G, [C] switch, bass note, [G] G, B, E, B, G,
B, switch, just like that.
And from there guys, we'll get started with verse.
For verse, what we're gonna have, our chord progression is gonna be E minor,
G,
C, and
back to G.
And we're just gonna repeat that until we get to [E] the pre-chorus.
So with our picking pattern, a couple times through those verse chords should look something like [Em] this.
[G] [C] [G]
[Em] [G] [C]
[G] [E] From there guys, we're gonna pre-chorus.
[D] Pre-chorus chord progression is gonna be [G] D,
G, and then C.
And we're gonna stay on C for two measures.
And
the one thing that's a little bit weird, that's kind of a bonus thing,
you don't have to do this if you can't reach the stretch,
but instead of playing a regular D on that, you can reach up here and hit this D,
this high E fifth [A] fret actually.
So high E fifth fret.
So rather than having your high E on second fret,
you're gonna be, everything's gonna be the same besides high E fifth fret.
[N] And it adds a lot,
that's actually exactly what it does in the song, but it is kind of a stretch.
So if you're a beginner and you can't hit that stretch, just play your regular D chord and you'll be just fine.
So a couple times through that pre [D]-chorus should look about like this.
[G] [C]
[D] [G] [C]
And guys, all we have left is chorus.
For chorus, [G] our chord progression is gonna be G,
[D] D,
[Am] A minor, [G] and then C.
And we're just gonna stick with that [C] same exact picking pattern.
So guys, a couple times through [G] that should look about like this.
[D]
[Am] [C] [G] [D]
[A] [C] [G] [D]
[Am] [C] [G] [D]
[Am] And guys, that's [Em] everything that you need to [Gb] know to play I'm With You on guitar.

If you have any song [F] requests,

[Gm] Link's in the description.
Guys,
this is [Dm] a beautiful song.
I'm [F] absolutely in love with this song.
So this is kind of a request, but kind of not.
I've gotten a couple requests to just do more advanced [C] joy in general, [Bb] and I, the other day, just heard this song,
and it just was, I don't know, it just stuck out to me.
[F] It's beautiful.
The guitar for it,
it is, the way that I'm playing it is finger picking, and so that aspect of it is a little bit more advanced.
I mean, it's not advanced.
[Bb] I'd say it's more intermediate, but the chords for it are [Dm] dead easy.
They're no big deal.
Every chord in here is just a very basic chord that any beginner will know how to play.
And you can also use a [F] pick with this if you want to.
You don't have to finger pick it,
but I would [Dm] encourage you to get out of your comfort zone with that a little bit.
If you haven't tried finger picking yet,
this is a great song to start [G] with because it [Dm] sounds complex.
[Bb] It sounds complicated,
but it's very [F] repetitive, and the chords are so easy.
So I've just been totally digging this [Bb] song.
I think it's just [F] beautiful.
The lyrics, the meaning behind it,
it just, for some reason, all just kind of hit home [Bb] for me, and I love it.
It's a beautiful song.
So I hope you guys enjoy this song and enjoy playing it as much as I have.
I hope you have a great day, and I'll see y'all soon.
