[N] Throughout the Old Testament, we read the history of the Jewish people, the people of Oman.
The story is full of good times and bad times.
Many times they have been conquered, taken from their home of Jerusalem, [F#m]
and [N] exiled or
enslaved only to return again in the later years.
Most of us know well of the slavery in the texts, but they were also, centuries later,
carried away to Babylon.
Last spring, we sang of the Babylonian captivity through the text of Psalm 157.
While the rivers of [Gm] Babylon did not receive the Lord, and then we walked in the way of
the liberate Zion.
On the willows there we hung up our harps, for [C] there our captors asked us for songs,
[F#] and our tormentors asked us for mirth, saying, Sing us one of [C#] the songs of Zion.
But how could we sing the Lord's song for the poor and the weak?
If I forgive you in my heart, let my right hand wither, let my tongue cling to the roof
of my mouth if I do not remember you, and I will [D#] not set Jerusalem above my eyes still.
[G] Today, as we [D#] join to celebrate World Communion Sunday,
[G#] [N] we have heard the prisoner of death
from many at the hands of those under his own [C#] hands.
[D#] [B] When [N]
we hear this, we cannot help but wonder at the strength of our own faith, and whether
we will be able to still say, I [C#] believe.
I believe in the Son.
I believe in the Son, even when it's not silent.
I believe in love.
I believe [N] in love, even when you don't feel it.
I believe in God, [F] even when he is silent.
