[G] [A]
Here [G] from the earth [C#] and the heavens, [A] from the hills to the [G] sea, from my head to my toes, I am [A] [D] Hawai [A]
'i.
[D]
Oh, yeah.
[F#] That's a beautiful song.
Thank you.
So I was asking some of the, when we perform a song, if there's maybe some thoughts,
how do you feel the song, does it connect to any of your thoughts or the topic at hand that we're talking about?
Up until a few years ago when I would go back to Hilo, my brother and I would go, my older brother and I would go down to Brown's Beach
and get in the water, and it's so hard to get in the water.
Especially when you're old and, you know, your feet are kind of soft
and you have to kind of negotiate all that sharp rock.
But then you get in the water, right, and the waves are breaking behind you.
It's times like this when we would, one of us would almost invariably say, God, it's just wonderful to be Hawaiian,
and you just never want to be anything else.

[A] [D] [F#m] I wonder [Bm] how long [D] ago the sun rose up [B] from the sea [A] below
to shine light upon the sea, [D] giving life to the i'a [B] and the [A] kōri.
I can't [B] say how long [D] ago, but here's one thing [Em] that I surely [A#] know,
[Bm] the heavens were here long [C] before us, my friend, [Bm] and will be long gone [B] before they ever [E] end.
From the [F#m] earth and the heavens, from [B] the hills to the [D] sea, from my head to my toes, I am Hawai'i.

[A] [D] I [A] wonder [Bm] how my life [A] would be [D] if they never came [Bm] from across [A] the sea.
[D]
Winds [B] blew the sails, heaven gave them [A]
direction, [D] while the ocean, clouds, and birds
[G] have to make [A#] a connection [Bm] to the place we call home, [C] the [Em] one that we know,
[Bm] the one that fed our people from [A] the young and old.
[D] From the earth and [A] the heavens, [B] from the hills to the [G] sea, from my head to my toes, I am [A] Hawai'i.
I think that there's several things that we can do and that we need to [D] do.
[F#m] And it begins [B] first with [G] developing [Bm] a common understanding among ourselves,
[D]
preserving our traditional [B] knowledge, [D] practicing it, sharing it with other [B] generations [D] is the first in my mind.
You can live off [Bm] of or [D] be guided through your na'au.
It [Bm] changes the prospect of just your everyday [D] routine.
[B] Not too many people wake [D] up in the morning and let their [G] na'au decide what's going to [A] happen today.
[D]
[B] I wonder if my [D] family will have the things it needs [Bm] just to be [A] happy,
[D] a home [B] they can call their [D] own where they can tell stories,
[Bm] be able [A#] to show [Bm] how the sun rises up [C] from the sea below,
how [Bm] the heavens give direction [A] so that we can know.
