Hey, how's it going?
I'm Robert Rendman from Master Guitar Academy.
Today I'm going to show you how to play Tush by ZZ Top, even though I don't quite have
the beard for it.
Oh well.
This is the classic tune.
Everyone knows it, right?
So the version I'm going to base this on is the Crossroads Guitar Festival from 2004.
And you know, one thing that's a bit tricky with this tune is that you have to use your
thumb for the bass note.
And Billy Gibbons, I think he does that quite a bit.
He keeps his guitar strung really low and then uses his thumb for the bass note.
So we're going to do that.
Alright, let's take a look.
This is what we do in the beginning.
[C] [Bb] [C]
[Bb] We [D] play that twice.
[C] [Bb] [G]
[Bb] The [Eb] first time without any drums and the second time with the drums.
On the third time we're going to switch to something slightly different and that's where
the vocals start.
But let's take a closer look.
You have to play the bass note [G] with your thumb.
G.
Let's do it slowly.
You start with that note G on the low E string and you play it muted twice.
[Bb] And then you go up here and I use my pinky with the ring finger on top for extra [G] strength.
[C]
Back to [G] G.
[C]
[Bb] [Abm] [G]
[Bb]
[G] And then
That's the rhythm.
[C]
[Bb] [C]
[Bb] That's one time.
We do it one more [E] time.
[G] [Bb]
[C]
[G] And at this point he starts singing.
And then we're going to switch to playing [C] only
[Bb] That's [E] it.
And I think he does a bit of a slide in with the thumb.
[C]
[Gb] [C] [Bb]
[C] [G] [C]
[Bb] [C] So you play that same thing four times.
And then we go to the four chord.
C7.
And instead of playing a chord he
[E] plays
[G] [A] [C]
Now we're going to walk back up to [E] G [F] using [Gb] [G]
our thumb.
[E] One more time.
[C]
[A] [E] [F] [G]
[C] [G] [Bb]
Now we go up to the five chord.
D7.
[Ab] And we [D] play
And it's not written in stone exactly how you pick it.
Something like this.
And then [Gm] down to [C] C7.
[G]
So I finish with just the open D string and the G string.
[D] Which happens right before the turnaround.
Let's do it one more time.
[C]
[G] [Em]
[D] [Gb] That's a [G] really cool turnaround.
So we have the pinky up here on the note G.
On the E string.
And then we walk down on the D string.
[C] [Em] [Eb]
[G] [D] Okay?
And then we finish [G] [Gb] with
So [N] that is an Eb7 [G] without [Eb] the bass note which would be here.
He's not playing that note.
He's just [G] playing
Maybe this
[F]
[G] [Bbm] But I don't think he's doing that.
Because when you play this chord using four notes with this much distortion it sounds messy.
[G] So I think he's skipping that note and just playing three [Cm] notes.
[G] [Gb]
Okay one [N] more time.
From the five [D] chord.
[C]
[G] [C] [Em] [Eb]
[G] [Gb] And [G] then we start over.
[C] [Bb] [C]
[Bb] [C] [G]
[C] [Bb] [C]
[A] [F] [Gb]
[C] [Bb]
[D] [C]
