[N] Hey, hey, what's up chicken pickers?
It's Vinnie for powertwang.com.
So today's lesson is just going to cover the little banjo lick for the intro of the song
Love Somebody by Keith Urban.
Hey, if you like this type of lesson, I've got plenty more free videos that you won't
find here on YouTube.
So the link is down here in the description box, so go check it out.
Alright, so moving on with today's lesson, the song is in the key of E.
And real likely
this song was probably, or the banjo part was probably done on a gitjo or band guitar,
which is really just a six string banjo that's tuned to like a guitar, a standard guitar.
At least any time that I've seen live footage in concert with Keith and the band, his guitar
players are usually playing a gitjo.
So for the sake of this tune, I'm using the Vari-X guitar, and of course it can simulate
kind of a banjo sound.
So by all means, you don't need that though.
This song is in standard tuning for standard guitars, so you can just play it on your telly.
But anyway, so [E] what we're going to do is again, it's in the key of E.
And all you're doing,
and it's really all we're doing is, you're doing a little bit of hybrid picking here,
but really what you're going to do is your pick will downstroke any of the notes on the
[Eb] G string, or the third string, and if you pluck any of the first or second strings,
that would either be done with your middle or ring finger.
And the first and second strings, those ones are always open.
You're only really moving on the third string.
You're just going to the different frets.
[Em] So anytime you hit the B and E strings, that's all open, so it makes it pretty easy.
But the first part of it here is what we're going to do is we're going to slide in from
the eighth to the ninth fret of the G string, [Abm] and then you're going to pluck with your middle
finger the B string, and with your [Em] ring finger the E string.
[Eb] [Em]
Just like that.
So then after that, you actually [A] slide up from the ninth fret to the eleventh fret on
the G string, [E]
[Eb] or [E] so.
And then after you slide up and you get to that eleventh fret, all you're going to do
is you're going to pluck the high E string, [B] and then pluck that eleventh fret on the G string again.
[Em] [Gb]
[Bb] So put those two parts [A] together and you've [Em] got,
[Ab] one more time.
[Em]
And then as we keep [C] moving on up, it's pretty [G] similar.
[E] [A] At least as far as the pattern here.
So like on this one, you're just going to slide up from the eleventh to the [Ab] thirteenth
fret on the G string, [Abm]
then you're going to pluck the B string, [Em] the E string,
[Ab] [E]
like that.
And then when you slide up from the thirteenth fret to the fourteenth fret on the G string,
[A] you're kind of doing the same thing where you just slide up to that fourteenth fret,
you hit [E] open E string, [D] and then you hit that fourteenth fret one more time.
[Eb] So if you put those two parts together, you've got, [E]
[A] [Eb] [E]
[Gm] just like that.
So it's pretty simple and throughout, it plays it several times throughout the song, and
each time, you don't have to play it exactly the same each time.
You can actually embellish on this a little bit.
Sometimes I'll actually [C] hit more of the [Eb] open strings.
[E]
So, again, you can play around with it, and again, each time through, you have several
opportunities throughout the song to play the lick.
So mix it up a little bit, add in a few extra of those open string notes to kind of change
it up a little bit and make it your own.
So anyway, that's pretty much it, at least for this one.
We're just covering that little banjo thing for that song, but again, if you like this
type of lesson, I've got plenty more free videos at my website, again, down there in
the description box.
Go check it out, and hey, thanks for tuning in, and we will see you soon.
