[A] [E] Hi, in this video we're going to learn how to play the solo for Runaway.
I'm going to play it on the guitar.
Originally, on Del Shannon's it was actually played on a thing called a Musitron, but I
can't seem to find mine.
[Am] Right, there's two related [Eb] videos to this that you [E] might like to play along with.
One is the whole song and it's got the chords and the lyrics to it.
There's a link to it up here on the right hand side of the screen.
There's also another video, a related video, where we learn how to play the rhythm, which
you might like to do.
OK, let's get [Am] straight into this.
The [A] solo is played over the chords of the verse.
[Abm] Let me play a little section at a time.
So [Am] we're going to go
[B] Easiest [Cm] way to play that.
The tab to this will be appearing up by [A] my head, hopefully.
I'm going to [B] start up here.
[A] We're going to play on the 7th and [Am] then we're going to do a little sweep where we play [B] all
of those, but [Am] not as a
[Ab] [A] It sounds best if you can dampen each note [E] after you've played it.
So you [C] [Ab] [C] [G]
[Gb] [Bb]
[G] notice in that little section there we're actually doing hammer-ons.
[Gm]
[Bm] [Db] [Gm] So we're [G] only picking the string once, but then we're
So we pick the string once.
[Gm] [Gb] [G]
[B] [Em] [Db]
[Em] [C]
[G] This is an interesting little fellow where we do the
So we're going to slide up from 3 to 5 and then pick the top E string.
[C] [A]
So we play the whole of that together.
So that's [Ab] half of the solo.
1, 2, 3, [Am] 4.
[E]
[C] [E] [C] [G]
[Em] [F] [E] [Am]
[Bm] [C]
[B] [A] So that's half of the solo.
[N] The second half of the solo is identical except for the last bar where instead [Em] of just going
[B] We actually play two [E] strings at a time.
[Bm] [C]
[Ab] [A]
We finish on an A.
So you go back to playing the rhythm part at that point there.
So we play that all together, fairly slow speed.
So we're going to play the whole thing twice, but with a different end to take you into the verse.
[B]
1, [Ab] 2, 3, [Am] 4.
