[Ebm] Hi
What's with the hat you ask?
Well, [N] here's the deal
I'd like to keep instructional videos and my pure music videos separate
so, you know YouTube usually takes a frame from one of the early sequences in a video and makes that the
Logo for the video.
So for your own sake if you're looking for pure music videos and you see me wearing a hat
Don't go there.
But if you would like to learn how to play a particular part and I can be of assistance
Well, that's what the hat represents.
This is my first instructional video.
So here we go
Well, the dulcimer is a pretty looking thing.
Don't you agree?
So I'm leaving it on the still frame while I make three disclaimers.
First of all
This is Joni Mitchell song and I think she is a brilliant genius
If in any way she would have any objection to my posting this on YouTube
I would be more than willing to remove it forthwith second
I need to tell you that this isn't my dulcimer and it's strung too light for this
The strings are way too loose and light gauge.
It would do better with heavier strings
We'd get better tone and it would fret truer.
The third thing is I'm not quite playing it in her key
I believe Joni did it in the key of C or C sharp
To get a little better tone.
I've tuned this thing to D D major
I'm sure you can do the transpositions if you learn the part.
Okay, that said let's get going
Originally, you'd use a dowel in your left hand to like a slide on a guitar and you'd pluck it with a feather quill
in your right hand
Only the top pair of strings would vary in pitch and the others would act as drones, you know, like bagpipes [Bb] like, you know
[B] Which is very nice, but a little limiting
She corded it came up with ways of playing chords on it vertically
Made a different instrument out of it
Okay, your low string.
I'm gonna call it low middle and high high is gonna be this little
Pair that course of strings the third course of strings.
Okay, so it's low middle high
Okay, low string [Bb] is tuned to the a below the D.
You're in a
[B] Middle string [Bb] is tuned to
The a above that it's an octave.
So you got two ways
[B] So where's our D?
Aren't we in the key of D?
Yes, that's what the pair up here is playing the note D Okay
To get the first chord of the song and to provide the major third that makes it sound like a nice major chord
Here's what you do.
You put your index finger on the fifth
Thinking like a guitarist, sorry third fret of the low string
Giving you the note D
You put your ring finger on the second fret of the [Eb] high pair
Pretty cord, huh?
Leave that middle string open and here's the neat [Bb] part your first three chords
You don't have to change your position of your [B] fingers at all relative one another you just go up
Try it yourself and you'll see how easy [Eb] that is
[Fm] [B] But here's the first trick
You need to reverse the relative position of these two fingers and play this chord for the next one.
It's your I have to count here
Seventh fret of a low string with your ring and two frets higher this time with your middle
Excuse me your index finger on the ninth fret of the middle string leave your pair open
neat cord, huh nice disc
Beautiful dissonance.
Okay, [Cm] and then you go up one
So just for those two you switch the relative [B] position so watch this [Eb] [B] switch
And then switch back [Ab] go down and [B] then you just go down.
So [Eb] watch this
[B] Yeah
[Ab] [Gm] Just
[F] [Eb] [Bb] [Eb]
one string one finger here.
[Bb] Okay being fretted [B] and
Here you have to do one more little interesting thing
You can't really effectively play that top pair on the five chord down here
So don't just don't play that top pair just play this little [Bb] thing on the bottom two strings
Let me show [Eb] you what you're doing here.
See it
fourth
[Bb] [B] fret fifth [Bb] fret
Excuse me dulcimer second third and fourth fret.
Okay, so it [Eb] goes
[Bb] You can put that little wiggle in there she does to give it a little color
So let's run the whole thing up to this point
[Eb] [Ab] [B] Kind
[Fm] [Gm]
[Bb] [Eb] [Bb]
[Eb] [Bb]
[B] of neat, [Bb] huh
[Eb] Just before all [Bb] of God wants you [Cm] say
I'm as Paul [Eb] stood as one northern star [F] and I said constantly in the [Eb] darkness
Where's that?
[Bb] Oops, if you want me, [B] I'll be in [Bb] the bar
Okay,
[B] the choruses [Fm] okay, this is just the second chord I showed you in the intro
You're in my [Gm] blood like holy [F] wine
tastes so [B] bitter and so sweet
[Eb] I could drink the [Bb] case [Eb] of you
[B]
Darling and I [Fm] would [Eb] still be [Bb] on my feet
still [Eb] be [Fm] on my [Eb] feet and
[Gb] [Cm] [B] So Bob's your uncle as they say in England and piece of cake as they say here in the US have fun with this
[N]
