[N] Hi and welcome to my tutorial on how to play Hurt by Johnny Cash on the piano.
This song is simple and even a beginner can play it with a little bit of practice.
It consists of two parts, the verse and the chorus and [Gb] there is no bridge.
We're going to begin with the verse, which in the original song is being played by a guitar.
So the verse consists of three chords.
It's the [A] A minor,
[Am]
the [C] C major,
[B] the D [D] major.
And the [A] way you strike the notes is this.
[Am] [C] [D]
[Am] [C]
[D] [Am]
Now, since I first learned this song on the guitar, I simply think [Ab] of it as three chords.
But if this is confusing [Bb] you, I'm going to show its hands separately,
so you can learn the song the way you prefer.
It's counterintuitive to me, but it may help some people.
So the left hand [A] plays A and [E] E,
[Bb] and then it [C] goes to C [E] and E,
[D] and finally D [Gb] and F sharp.
And it [A] goes like this.
[E] One, two, three, [C] four.
One, [D] two, three, [A] four.
[C]
[D] So [N] if you decided to learn it the hard way, that was the hard part.
[Am] The right hand is pretty simple and it plays A minor, [C] C major, [D] and D major.
And you play it like this.
[Am] One, two, three, four.
[C] [D] [Am]
[C] [D]
So, [A] both hands.
[Am]
[C] [D]
[Am] [C] [D]
[Ab] And that's all there is to know about the verse.
We'll now move to the chorus.
The chorus consists of four chords.
[G] The G major, [Am] the A minor, the F [F] major, and the C [C] major.
The left hand [G] plays a single note.
[A] G, [F] A, [C] F, and C.
And the right hand [G] plays the chord.
[Am] [F] [C]
[Ab] So, did you learn the four chords?
Well, I liked.
The truth is that the chorus consists of the G major, the A minor seventh,
the F suspended or augmented or whatever that was in music theory, and C major.
But the reason I lied is because you don't [Gb] need to know all this.
We'll keep it simple.
You play the four chords just as I showed,
[C]
and your pinky always plays [E] the G above middle C.
As simple as that.
So, now you've learned the chorus, and it should sound something [G] like this.
[Am]
[F]
[C] [G]
[Am]
[F]
[C]
So, if you want to add some tension to the song, you [Ab] should definitely use some sustain.
And you can also play it like this on the [G] second part.
[Am]
[F] [C]
[G]
[Am] [F]
[C]
[Am] [C]
[D] [Am]
[N] And that was it.
I hope you enjoyed
