How to Play "Hurt" by Johnny Cash on Guitar chords
Start Jamming...
Hey guys, it's Julie with Mahalo, and I hope you're having a good day.
I'm having a good day
But it's about to get [Bm] sadder
Not for any real big reason, but you know just simply because I'm gonna teach you one of the saddest songs ever
This is hurt now.
This [Bb] is the Johnny Cash version
But as you well know or as you well should know this is actually a nine-inch nail song
Trent Reznor wrote this but the reason why I'm doing this version is because it's pretty easy to play
So and I [Am] think you'll enjoy it and then you can make everybody around you cry, which is great
Because we all want to do that sometimes.
I don't know why [D]
[Am] now
Before we do that though.
Let's learn the chords so for the verse.
We just need three chords.
We need a minor
Which is open a two two one and open [E] and then we need [C] C major
On the A string that's three two open one and [Cm] open and then we [D] need D major
Which is open D two three and two now notice
I don't have a pick [Bb] because I'm using my fingers see if I could get that there there we go fingers
Okay, so what am I doing here?
I am picking
the A and the [B] D string on the A minor so the bass and then one string [Am] up and
Then [A] if you can see my first second and third finger on my right [D] hand are picking the G
The B and the E.
They're picking [Am] them all at the same time
Going up so we got
Like that on a minor same thing on [C] C
Now on [D] D.
What you're gonna.
Do is just place that thumb up a string on the D string
Like so so we have D G and then [E] pick so we have [Am] a minor
[C] C
[D] D a [Am] minor
again
[C]
[D] D and
Then we're going to keep repeating that that's the intro and keep repeating that for the verse so with vocals something like [Am] this
[C] I hurt [D] myself [Am] today
[C] To see [D] if I still [Am] feel
And so go ahead [D] and keep playing that verse just so now when we get to the end of that verse
[Am]
[C] C
[D] D and now we're going to go into our
Chorus or B section so we need these chords we need [G] G
So 3 2 open open 3 and 3 and [E] then we need back [Am] to a minor and then we need [F] F
So go ahead
bar that first fret all the way across [D] to the E string and then it's [F] 3 3 & 2 and
then C
[C]
[G] Now we're going to change up our pattern a little bit
[Em] So what I'm doing is I'm keeping my first second and third finger on these G B
And E strings or first second third finger if you're number minded or string if you're never minded first string second string third [Gm] string
I'm picking them all together, and then my thumb is picking the bass [G] note after
So it's kind of the reverse of what we did in the verse
So I have G [Am] a minor
[F] F [C] C
again [G] G a [Am] minor F
[C] C
[F] Now if that bar chord F is [Em] difficult just make a mini [C] F miniature F
[Em] So as you can see I'm not borrowing all the way
It's just barring the last two strings, but I'm keeping my my rest of my [F] fingers where they should be
Now what [G] bass note should I pick well the lowest string of whatever the chord is so G
It would be the E or 6 string on a minor
[Am] It's the a string [Em] on F.
If you do the full bar.
It's the [F] low E 6 string
If [C] you don't do the full bar, then it would be [F] the a string and [C] on C.
It's also the a string
[B] So what does this sound like with vocals [G] something like this?
[Am] What?
[F] [C]
My [Am] sweetest friend
[G] [Am]
Everyone
[F] [C] Goes away in the end
[G] So there's your verse and then we're going to end on G on that and go back to our
Sorry, that was the chorus we end on G on the chorus and we go back [A] to the verse
And [Am] [C]
[D] [Am] [C]
[Am] we play through that play [G] through our chorus one more time, which has two extra kind of outro taglines
But it's the same thing as you did.
So we have G a
[Am] minor [F] F
[C] C and
We get to the very [G] end of the song
we end on G and we let that ring out and
