How to Play "Here Comes My Girl" by Tom Petty on Guitar chords
Start Jamming...
What's up guys?
It's Thomas from the Band Radius and we're breaking down Here Comes My Girl, Tom Petty.
Such an awesome song, super simple.
It's in A.
What we're doing is we're taking A and we're keeping A and we're going to give
B on top of it.
But we're keeping the A.
So we're doing A and then we're giving a gift of B and putting
it on top.
If that makes sense.
And then we just repeat it.
Then we go back to A and then give the B, but keep the A as well.
So let me explain.
So here's A.
[Bm] We're going up to this chord.
What is this?
Well, it's [A] a B over A.
And we're going open on the A string.
Second fret, second fret, second fret, because that is A.
And then we're just sliding everything
up to [E] 4-4-4.
[A] But keeping open A.
[Bm] And here's the B.
Here's the 4-4-4 over [A] the A.
[A]
So
[B]
[B] Man, that's it.
Super easy.
[A] And that is the verse.
[B] [A]
Here [E] comes my girl.
Okay?
[A] Okay?
[E] So pretty easy.
We're just going [E] from E.
This is open.
Second fret, second fret, one, open, open.
We're going from E to [A] A.
And [E] repeat that.
E to [A] A.
And then we [F#m] go F sharp minor, [F#] second fret 4-4 [F#m]-2-2-2.
And then [B] B, which is second fret 4-4-4.
We're going [F#m] from this [B] to this.
Okay?
And you're just going to hold that B for three [E] bars.
So the chorus is E, [A] A, [E] E.
[Em] So [A] A, then F sharp minor, and then B.
[B] Just hold on the B.
Back to the A.
[F#m] [A]
[F#m] [A]
It kind of does that rhythm.
[Bm] [A]
[Bm] [A]
Okay?
[D] And that's back to the verse.
And so you know the verse, you know the chorus,
[F#] and the only other part is the bridge.
So let's get to it.
F sharp.
It's basically F sharp [F#] the whole time, but there's a cool rhythm.
So we'll break it down slow.
So it's like one, okay?
And it's palm muted.
[F#m] And I'm just on the second fret, and I'm just [E] pulling off on the open.
Now I'm all on the low string.
So we're going one.
Okay?
And then we end it with.
[E] So.
[F#]
[Em] And then on top of that,
we have a really cool riff, which is one, two.
[C#]
[F#] So it comes in on three.
So one, two.
[F#] [B]
And that [F#] is, we're on the B string,
we're doing a [C#] hammer on on the second fret,
and then we're also pulling [G] off,
and then [A#] putting third fret on the [F#] G string,
fourth fret on the D, and then [C#] open E.
One, two.
[F#]
[B] Trying to do them both at the same time is [F#] pretty tough,
but [Em] that is the bridge.
Boom, here [E] comes my girl.
Back to [A] the chorus.
Super easy.
And then you end on the A.
[Bm] Then B, or over the [A] A.
A.
[Bm] Back to the B, over the A.
[D#] That is it.
So [B] here comes my girl.
[A] I'll see you guys later.
Tom Petty, super simple.
That's why I love this guy.
Put his melodies and everything, make a song.
So you guys be inspired, write a song,
and you don't have to get super creative with your chord structure or timing.
I mean, you can do that as well.
That's the best thing.
There are no rules.
There are only guidelines.
If you wish.
I don't know.
I don't know.
So here we go, guys.
Super easy stuff.
Make a sweet melody.
Be simple with your chords.
Maybe all you need is just an A,
[B] and then a gift of B on top.
So we'll see you guys later.
And, uh
Here comes my [E] girl.
[G] Oh, man.
What a song.
All right, guys.
Later.
[E] [A]
