Hi, my name is Luke and that was the intro to Heart of Gold by Neil Young.
[Ab]
This is a G harmonica here.
I'm going to do a quick lesson on this nice little lick.
This is some really fun, easy harmonica playing.
Of course, I am playing this on a G harmonica, so you do have to have a G harmonica, which
is one of the lowest ones if you want to go ahead and play along with this song.
Okay, well let's dive right into it.
Again, we're in first position, so we are in the key of G.
And of course, Neil is playing it, I think, with a crutch, holding it and playing guitar
at the same time.
[G] If you want to, I could try to do a video on that, but for now, let's just work on this
nice little lick here.
So, it startshe's
playing double stops at the beginning, but to begin with, let's
just do single notes.
I think that's going to be the best way to go here.
And then we can make him double stop.
[Bm]
So we're starting on the 5 blow.
And then we're going to the 6 blow.
And then kind [C] of a quick draw blow on 5.
And then a draw on 4.
[Am] And I'm kind of saying, Oi.
[N] Oi.
And then 4 [Gm] blow to 3 blow.
[D] No.
[Bm]
Okay?
So, again, to review.
5 blow.
6 blow.
Then on the 5, we're going to do a draw blow, kind of quickly.
Then we're going to Oi on the 4 draw.
4 blow.
3 blow.
This is all in the tabs of the info section too, of course.
So let's do that, nice and slow.
1, 2, 3, 4, uh.
[Am] [G] [Bm] Let me slow it down a little.
So, 1, 2, 3, 4, uh.
[Cm] [F] [Am]
[G] [D]
Okay.
Next, we are going to go up to the 6 blow.
We're going to go from the 6 blow to the 7 blow.
I want to apologize because my 7 blow is a little bit flat on my harmonica.
My harmonica is a little out of tune.
So if your 7 blow sounds a little higher in pitch, it's because mine is flat.
It's not you.
So, then from the 7 blow, again, similar to the first time around, first phrase, we're
going to do a quick draw blow, but this time on whole 6.
So the second phrase sounds like this.
[Eb]
And then I'm going to draw on 6 again and say Oi.
[Em] [Gb]
[Ab] And then 6 blow, [Bm] 5 blow.
Okay, let's try that phrase [E] again.
I'll slow it down a little bit.
1, 2, 3, 4, uh.
[Bm]
[D] Then there's a rest again.
As all these phrases are not beginning on beat 1, that's why I'm always saying 1, 2,
3, 4, uh.
Uh is where the rest happens.
Okay, so then there's a rest again.
And this is double stops.
We'll just do it as double stops.
Ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta.
And [G] we're just
[Bb]
And so that's, [G] I think
I [N]
think that's what it is.
I think it's the 3-4 blow, ta-ta-ta.
Then the 4-5 blow, ta-ta-ta.
Then the 5-6 blow, ta-ta-ta.
[G]
[Fm] [G]
And those last three notes were 5 draw, 5 blow, 4 blow.
And that's the end of the whole intro lick.
Let's do those ta-ta-ta-ta-ta's again.
Starting on the 3-4 blow.
A little slower.
1, 2, 3, 4.
[C]
[G]
[C]
[G]
Okay.
And that's the whole thing.
So let's try the whole thing together now, kind of nice and slow.
1, 2, 3, 4, uh.
Ah.
Let's re
The one thing I didn't
The first two notes actually, instead of just playing from the 5 to the 6 as single notes,
now let's go ahead and make those two.
So instead of 5, we'll do 4 and 5.
Instead of 6, we'll do 5 and 6.
[A] And then again, 4 and 5 on the draw [G] blow.
Okay?
[A] [D]
[G] So we're back to single notes on the 4 draw, 4 blow, 3 blow.
[Gb] [G] [D]
Now to the 5 blow.
[E]
[F]
[G] Rest.
[Db] [Em]
[Cm] And that's the intro to Neil Young, Heart of Gold.
So I hope that's helpful to you.
And then if you would like me to do one later on, just let me know.
I can do another video on other ones.
But just learning this one should get you close enough that you can probably figure out the other stuff he's doing throughout the song.
Again, this is some really nice, easy, first position harmonica stuff on G harmonica for Neil Young's Heart of Gold.
I hope you [Dm] find that helpful.
Thanks so much for watching.
And please continue to reach out to me on Facebook and Twitter and through YouTube or Google Plus or whatever.
All these ways to connect these days.
And keep on playing the [G] harmonica.
