5 [Abm]'2", I'm [E] blue, but I'm too fluffy, [A] who hasn't [D] anybody seen [G] my gal?
[Eb] Hi, I'm Doc Marshall for Lessons.io.
Today let's look at a really fun song from way back in the 20s or 30s, whenever it was, called 5'2".
We'll play it in the key of G.
And [G] we're gonna need a G chord.
Then we'll need a [B] B chord.
We'll need [E] an E7.
[Ebm] An [A] A.
[Db] A [D] D.
[Ebm]
And then back [G] to the G.
Now that's [Eb] all the chords in the song.
Even the chorus has the same [G] pattern.
It's B [E] [A] [D] [G] and G.
So you don't [Eb] change anything on that, you just keep the whole thing going the same pattern that we just went over.
Okay, now there's a couple of interesting things here.
Number one, all of these are [G] major chords.
The G, which is our number one chord, is the [E] G major chord.
[Bbm]
When we go up to the [B] B, we can play that up B7 if you like, that's fine, sounds good.
[Eb] And then we go to the E7.
[E]
[Gb] And then to the [A] A.
Now that A can be a 7 too, [Abm] just the way we did it over here.
[A] But in the key of [G] G, [Bb] the A should be [Am] a minor, right?
It should be a minor chord, [F] but it isn't in the older songs.
So we have [A] A, made of 7th.
[E] And then we [D] do a D7.
[G] And then we have the G again.
Now if you look [F] at the way the chords operate on the guitar, you'll see some nice patterns emerge.
We have the G of course when [G] we start.
[Ab] Then we go to the third, [B] which is B.
Now we have B [E] and E.
So look at [B] the way that works.
[Bb]
Now just do the [Ab] same thing again, only two frets lower.
We [A] have the A and we [D] have the D.
[B] [E]
[Dbm] E and [D] G.
[A] [F] That makes it a little bit more comfortable when you're starting to play and say,
Now back to G, what's my next chord?
[E] [A] See that [D] pattern happening?
And [G] then back to G.
So we have the G [Abm] pattern [Dbm] now.
[G]
So all [Eb]
major chords.
And now what we're going to do is we're going to put some bass notes in here too.
When we [G] play, we hit the bass note and then the chord.
[Abm] Next chord, B, [E] E.
Now watch over here, we're going [E] to do this.
E with that finger.
That finger right there is going to move between those two bass notes.
We [F] go to the [A] A.
[F] And then we go [D] to the D.
Same thing with that moving bass.
[G]
Now you can do it two ways.
You [Eb] can do it with the bass and counter basses, as I'm doing here.
[B]
[E]
[A] [D] [G]
[Abm] Or you can do it with just one [G] bass note.
[Abm]
[E] [A]
[D]
So pick your bass style that you like the best, the kind of feel that you [C] like for the song.
And make it comfortable for yourself, of course.
The main thing is that the [B] chords move kind of quick.
[D] [Abm]
[E] [D]
[G] So you want to be [Bm] comfortable when you grab those chords.
[B] Now, let's take it from the beginning.
This is the verse.
[Abm] [E]
[A] [D]
There's another verse.
[G] And then we're back on our G.
Now we're going to do the chorus.
[Eb] [E] Same chorus.
[D] [G]
[Abm] [E]
[A]
[D] [Abm] [E]
[A] [D] [G]
And [F]
there's your whole song, all in one little nutshell there.
Remember, all the chords are major chords.
There's no minor chords in this.
And remember those patterns.
We went from our B [A] to the E.
[G] That's in the key of G, of course.
Change the [Eb] key, and of course you change the chords, too.
But remember those [Abm] patterns, because it makes it easy for the hands to move up and down the neck.
