The first thing we have to do for looking out my back door is get in tune.
We're going to do something that John Fogarty did often, which is to down-tune the whole guitar by a full step.
So take your [C] first string down to [D] D, [B] second string down to A, [A] third string down to [F] F,
[Eb] fourth down to [C] C, [Eb] fifth down to [G] G, sixth down to [Dm] D.
[F] Now your guitar acts like it's in standard [Bb] tuning, the chord shapes all work, [F] but you're down-tuned by a full step.
Which he does for various reasons that I won't get into in this particular lesson.
He starts off though with this no chord.
[Eb] You see on your song sheet, it's probably easiest to follow the song sheet for this rhythm part.
You see NC on your song sheet, no chord.
He just damps all the strings, just rests your fingers across them and set up this rhythm.
So all these muted, damp strings.
[F] Accent the one and the three as much as you can.
Notice that it's swung in there.
[B] But at speed, it's almost [F] impossible to notice that it's [G] swung.
You're almost just feeling it more than deliberately [Eb] doing it.
There's your full speed.
Two bars of that is your no chord part of the intro.
And [F] into the main chord section, start with a C chord.
And to get the feel of the intro, which includes sort of what the bass is doing, you want to play this for the C chord going to A minor.
[Bb]
[Gm]
[Eb] So on a [Abm] C chord, with the reinforced C chord, 6th string, [Bb] 3rd fret as well.
[F] And A minor exactly the same.
[Gm] 5 down, 6 down, 5 down, 6 down, up.
[Bb]
[Gm] F,
[F] and if you can, put the thumb over on the 6th string or play it as a bar, that will be fine too.
[Eb]
And then 4 is pretty good.
[Bb] Going to C.
[Eb]
5 down, 6 down, up.
Same rhythm as [Fm] before.
And then G is [Eb] going to go to C, but we'll do it like this.
[F]
There's the G part.
6 down, up, [G] 5 open, [Am] 5 at the 2nd fret, [Fm] and [Bb] C.
5 down, 6 down, up.
[F]
1 and a 2 [Bb] and 3 and 4 and a.
[Eb] Here's that whole intro again slowly.
[Bb] [Gm]
[Eb] [Bb]
[F] [Bb]
[Eb] We're going to take a look at looking out [E] my back door lead part.
So have the tab in front of you for the lead part of looking out my back door.
We'll divide it up into 4 sections.
So first of all we want section A of your tab.
It's just 2 bars.
And it sounds like [C] this.
[Eb] Now on the record it's being played [F] by a dobro with a slide.
So if you have a dobro with a slide, then go ahead and play it exactly the way it's written on the tab.
But sliding into the notes.
I think it's more practical to say that probably you're going to want to play all the lead parts on one guitar.
You're not going to want to switch between dobros and electric guitars.
So I've put this dobro part onto a normal guitar without the use of a slide.
And I've done it this way.
The first 2 notes are the 10th fret of the 2nd string, but slide into both [G] of them.
Then you want the 2nd [Fm] string 8th fret.
[F] Then I like to use the ring finger on the 3rd string 9th fret.
Slide it back to [C] 7.
And then play 5 with your index [Bb] finger.
[Eb] So that's bar 1.
[Bb]
[Eb] Now [F] ring finger back to the 7th fret of the 3rd string.
[Eb] Slide it to 9 [D] twice.
[F] You'll need to stop the 1st one when you reach the 9th fret.
Otherwise you'll hear it slide [D] back, which you don't want.
[F] I stop it by resting the pick back on [Abm] the string.
Back to 7 and [D] slide again.
And [B] then you've got 2 choices.
[C] You can either slide 9 to 7 [Cm] and play [Eb] 5.
Or I tend to [F] pull off [C] 9 to 7.
[Cm]
And then bring [Bb] the index finger [Eb] down to 5.
Either way is absolutely fine.
That bar is
[D]
[Cm] [Ebm] And 4 and
[F] And then we'll come to vocal on the next 1 beat.
So here it is again at full speed.
