Hey, what's up you guys?
Marty Schwartz here with Marty Music.
Gonna break down the song Cocaine by Eric Clapton or JJ Cale wrote it, but the Clapton
version, super fun blues rock song to play.
Also you can support me with the Marty Music thing.
I appreciate you signing the newsletter, you get some free courses.
The first comment down there, you can see where you can go to it.
And I just appreciate it.
But enough of that, let's learn this tune.
Here we go.
Alright, I'm gonna start with the most basic version of the riff and then I'm gonna build
off of it.
The original, the studio Clapton recording has multiple guitar parts.
I watched a few different live versions and there's some different stuff there too.
So let's start with the basics.
[D] [E] [F]
[D] [E]
[D] [E] [C] [D]
[E] And so what we're doing is we're playing a power chord.
It's an E power chord, so 7th fret A string, 9th on the D, and then 9th on the G.
And that's the little shape that you're gonna move.
It starts with the root on the 7th.
5, 7, [Dm] [E] just like [D] [E] that.
[Am] Rest, [E] and then you hit that D power chord, the 5th fret.
[D]
[E] [Dm] [E] [D]
So that's mostly what he's doing live.
[E] [Dm] [E] [D]
[E] [Fm]
[D] Now the turnaround is that E power chord, so 7, [E]
then [D] 5, then [C] 3.
[B]
[E] That's it.
[D] Just
Do do do, [C] do do do, 3, [B] [E] 2, cocaine.
[F] [D] Do do [E] do.
[D] [E] [D]
[E] Okay, so there's a few other things.
One thing you could do instead, and this is, I heard this in a different live version,
and this kind of combines two of the guitar parts a little bit.
You can go like this.
[D]
[E] And so all you're doing different is you're doing the first part the same.
7, 7, 5, 7, [Dm] so
[E] But this time, you go down to the 5th, you pick it and slide it to the 7, and back.
[Dm] Like that.
And that makes it combine with this little riff that's [E] going on.
[D] So
[E] it kind of puts two parts together.
[D]
[E] [Dm] See [E] that?
[D]
Slide up, back, pick.
[Em]
[D] Do [E] do do, do do do.
[Dm] [E] [D]
[E] Just a little different.
[D] [E] [D]
[E]
[D]
So now, [E] if you had one guitar player playing the first part,
[Dm] [E] [A] [D]
[E] then you could add this other part here, which you can do the power chords the same,
[Dm] [E]
[D] [B] and that goes along with it.
So you're sliding.
It's the E minor pentatonic.
You're sliding from the 7 to the 9 with your ring finger on the D string,
then 9 on the G, [E] [D] and then [E] the 7.
So there's three different things there.
[D]
And then here's the [E] second way, [Dm] [E] [D]
and then the third [E] way.
[Dm]
[E] [G]
There's also a little double stop.
You can hear [E] [Em]
[A] there's some little planky-chankies going on in there
on the 12th fret of the B and the high E.
And then another thing is you have some fills in the E minor [B] pentatonic.
[A] [C] [E] You [B]
know, you could do it right here, hammering on.
[D] [Em]
There's just some [B] different little licks going on there on the second fret of the A.
[A] Open, [E] 3.
So check it out.
[Dm] [E] [D]
[A] [E] [D]
[E]
[D] [G]
[E] [Dm] [E] [Dm]
[E] 7, [D] [C]
5, 3, [B] 2, [E] go, K.
[Fm] [Dm] [G]
[Bb] [Em]
[E] [Dm]
[C] All [B] [Dm] right, there it was.
Thanks again for hanging out.
You guys really appreciate it.
