How to Play Brilliantly Fast chords
Start Jamming...
So it seems all piano players want to play fast.
So today we'll talk about playing fast
Before we get the discussion [Db] going when we play some stuff that I think is fast to sort of set the stage
[Am]
[Gb]
[Db]
[Bb] Okay,
[Gb] [E] [B]
[Fm]
[Bb]
[F] [D] [Eb]
[D] [Bbm] [Ebm] [Bb]
[Dbm] [Ab] [Gb] [F]
[A] [Ab] [Bb]
[Bm] [Gb] [C]
[B] [G] [F] [N]
well
You may have to give up something to play that thought and there's a way to do it
Which I can show you but keep in mind that
The golfer Tiger Woods gave up golf for six months once to totally destroy his game start all over again
He deconstructed his stroke did terribly in his own putting green I guess and then finally got it together
So there is something to this that I need to explain to you
Okay, the first rule of fast piano playing is to have as many notes under the hand in one handful as you can
For instance in a C scale you have three notes
[Em] [F] And then five more
The next thing [N] is to keep the thumb way in or the knuckle
the thumb the forefinger determine everything all the power comes from these two things and when you
Change positions handful to handful the thumb always determines where you go and how far the hand goes in and a lot of other things
Okay, so thumb in over the knuckle not over the nail in a minute.
See what happens if you don't do that
Okay, when you practice the various positions always practice the next higher position first for instance in a C scale
Anyone can do the [Am] first three notes
It's done you should be thinking [G] away to the next handful, [F] which is F
The reason you practice the next higher handful first is that it needs to have a very specific
Position based on the thumb to play it.
Well
[Bb] If you don't if you just let the preceding position
Determine the position [F] of the next handful.
[G] It'll get all messed up.
In other words [D] when you do this
[E]
Cross your thumb under your hand [Ab] is pointed at about a ten o'clock
[F] But to play the next handful fast you need to have your hand pointed almost one o'clock
He's 12 for one thumb in over the knuckle
Okay
[C]
Now if you allow the first position [Dm] determine
[E]
[Ebm] Next position thumb hits the [F] knuckle you have to [A] suddenly recoup get the hand over here
[F] In coming down it's the same thing reverse
To know how to finish out the second hand
You [Abm] need to practice the next position this case [Am] going down
[F]
[C] [D] If you bring the thumb way in you see the hand look like this index in the middle of two black keys
[Dm] [C] And [F] this will help you flip over and just get there.
You just think away to
[C] if [Dm] you [Fm] don't
[Ab] Reach over now in reverse the thumb will [F] go over the nail
And as you come [Dm] down these fingers will fall off the piano
To be thumb on the nail here
[C] And each time you do that hitting the thumb
[E] [Bm] On the nail and [Gbm] crossing over too much the thumb was always loud.
[A] It'll always determine the downbeat
[Dm]
But [C] [Fm]
if you bring the thumb way in over the knuckle and then keep a beat in mind always
[Dm] Okay [C]
be aware that the downbeat in the second position is G
[Dm] [Eb] [Dm] This way [C]
[N] you avoid hitting the thumb loudly when it's turn comes up
So how do you do this you do memorize where the beats are the beats are in fact?
C e G [Am] B
[B] So [G] [Am]
[G]
[C] [G] [C]
[G] [Am] [Dm]
[C] [F] [C]
[N] what you're doing is blocking out the position which it becomes really important when you go up two octaves
Because you notice the beats are [Am] this
[G] [B]
So [G] [C]
[G] what was that well it was [Am] one three [G] two four [D] after two
Here's the thumb down here
Having [B] to move almost an [Am] octave
[G]
[F] [G]
[C] So
You think [Ab] it's hard just to move the beats
[C] [G] You [Dm]
[G] [C] can see how hard it would be to maintain a good [F] hand position to thumb in when you're actually doing the only extra notes
Now
[C] this [F] applies to jazz too.
You're doing more abstract ideas.
Here's a bebop
[Bb] If [F]
you analyze that slow it down becomes little handfuls [Eb] three [Gm] notes
[D] four or five [Bb] notes [Ab] and
[Dm] Then about eight more
[F] Each one is a little handful
[Bb] [Dm] But [A] [Eb] [F]
[N] it sounds like one scale you learn
Array of notes, but you cannot think of note [D] to note to note because you'll never change position fast enough
[Gm]
[N] And you can't think of the next note anyway, so always think of groups of three to four to five notes at the same time
like the [Ebm] pentatonic scale
[Eb] No [Db] [Eb]
limit how fast you can play something like that.
You're thinking is a handful [Db] to a handful
So recapping the scale part of [Dm] this two [C]
[Am] little handfuls
And each one can be played infinitely fast first three notes I
Played it infinitely fast slow it down
[G] the [F] next five I
Played it infinitely fast.
It sounded like a chord now slow it down
So [C] [N] the last thing to do is simply just jump to the next position with no [Dm] thumb on
So [C] [F]
[C] we'll go into part two
