[Bbm] Hey, what's up y'all?
[B] This is Daquan Bowens [Eb] with daquanbowens.com, [Ab] here to help musicians [Gb] take their playing,
their [B] musicianship, and [Bbm] anything related [Eb] to music to the next level.
[Ab]
And today I want [Gb] to show you guys how to play [B] auxiliary keyboards or [Bbm] second [Eb] keys.
[Ab] In a [Gb] band setting or at least in a pro setting, most likely [Eb] you'll see more than one keyboard player.
[Ab] And today I [Gb] want to show you guys my [B] approach to playing [Bbm] auxiliary [Eb] keyboards.
But [Ab] first I want you guys to [Gb] understand that no [B] one is better than [Bbm] the other.
[Eb]
Auxiliary keys [Ab] is just as important [Gb] as main keys [Bbm] or the [B] keyboard player playing [Eb] the main lines.
Alright, so [Ab] what I'm going to do is [Gb] play the line first, the keyboard [B] line first.
[Gb] Okay?
[Abm]
[Gb] Many [B] musicians think [Bbm] that if I'm the main [Abm] player, it [Gb] just gives me room to just [B] do whatever.
And [Db] that's not the case.
[Ab] [Gb]
[B] The main line is a [Db] part just like everything else.
[Abm]
And [Gb] all the people who get to work, they know how [B] to play parts.
[Eb]
[Ab] [Gb] [B]
[Eb] Let's say that's [Ab] the [Gb] line, okay?
[B] So keep [Bbm] that in your [Eb] head.
I'm trying to [Ab] do this live real time, so [Gb] the piano line isn't going to be there, [B] okay?
[Bb] So [Eb] on my auxiliary board, [Ab] I have a [Gb] bell.
[Eb] [Ab] [Gb] Say if this was a cover song and [B] you [Bbm] heard [Eb] that line in a song, [Ab] just learn that [Gb] part
instead of trying to create your [B] own lines.
[Bbm] [Eb] Alright?
That's [Ab] rule number one.
Just [Gb] find lines in the song [Bbm] that are signature [B] and just learn [Eb] those things.
Alright?
[Ab] Here we [Gb] go.
[B] [Gb] [Eb] [Ab]
[Gb] [B] [Gb] [Eb]
[Ab] Alright?
[Gb]
[Eb] [Ab] I'm going to try to play these [Gb] together.
[B] [Gb] [Eb] [Ab] Okay, so you can hear it in real [Gb] time.
Here we [B] go.
[Eb]
[Ab] [Eb] [Gb]
[Eb] [Ab] Alright.
[Gb] [Eb] [Ab]
[Eb] [B] [Eb]
[Ab] [Db] [B]
[Eb] And the aux player, [Ab] [Gb] your job is to hit those accents too.
[Eb] [Ab]
[Gb] For example, say [B] that's a piano [Ebm] line.
Mimic it.
[Ab] [Gb] [B]
[Eb] And then back [Abm] to the chord.
[B] I think I forgot a line.
[Gb] [Eb] That's not [Ab] exactly it.
[B] [Db]
[Ab] But I hope you get the point.
[B]
[Eb] Alright, so I'm [Ab] going to go on live so it's all [B] mistakes.
[Eb] [Ab]
Alright, [Gb] so verse two.
[B] [Eb]
You see, you got [Gb] the guitar line, the [B] keys line.
[Eb] So you don't really have to do [Ab] much.
Just [Gb] add the color.
[B] Now, [Eb] if there's no extra [Abm] lines in the song, [Gb] [B] what you want [Ebm] to do is [Gb] make sure that [Ab]
you're
[Eb] not in the way when you're creating [B] stuff.
[Gb]
[B] [Eb] Alright, here we go.
Now I'm going to change [Ab] it to a little [Gb] brass sound on the one.
[B] [Bbm] [Eb]
You know, just pretend [Gb] there was an accent there.
[Bbm] Then I would [B] use a bigger [Eb] sound, like a synth brass, [Abm] and just [Gb] accent the one.
[B] [Bbm] [Eb] You know what I'm saying?
[Ab]
[Eb] [B] [Db]
[Ab] Alright, now I'm going to get a lead.
[Gb] [Ab]
[Ebm] [B] [Gb]
[B] [Eb] [Ab]
[Gb] I'm not in the way.
I'm still [B] following the chord changes.
[Eb]
I'm not playing super fast [Db] with the lines.
So, leaving [B] space.
[Db] [Ab] [Gb]
[B] I would say as an aux player, your most important sounds are probably those bells, [Em] synth brass,
synth leads, strings.
[B] You know, and this is assuming that you have nothing to learn in the song that you're covering.
[G] You know, and if you're just, if you're covering a song and it has [B] material to learn,
or parts to learn, I would learn those lines.
If it has a horn line in [G] it, learn those lines because it's just going to help you as a player
because you're going to be able to, you're going to start to be able to think as that
instrument that you're covering and just take your playing to the next level.
And trust me, the people you play with will respect you so much for that.
[B] Alright, so I hope you enjoyed this lesson.
This was kind of different.
And it was kind of [Am] difficult to kind of do in real time.
So, I hope you guys enjoyed this.
