What's up everybody, this is Brian from The Rare Occasions.
Many of you have been asking how to play certain songs of ours, and [G] since it's December, I
figured we'd kick things off with a glow.
I put together some sheet music, which is available on our website.
In it you'll find the chords, the lyrics, these weird diagrams that show you how to
play everything on guitar, and a piano arrangement, which sounds like this.
[Gm] [Bb]
[Gm] [Bb] [Eb]
[Bb] [Cm] [Bb] [Gm]
For this video we'll be focusing on guitar, since that's what I play in the recording.
A glow is basically broken up into two sections.
There's the quiet section, and the loud section.
Very inventive.
So for the quiet section, I play with the neck pickup, and it's a very soft, finger picking tone.
It's a [Bb] 6-8 feel accent on the [Am] first beat [G] mainly.
[Gm] I play that with the thumb, and then everything [E] else I strum with my index finger.
So the chords on this song [Gm] start out with a G minor 7.
You can [B] also play just a regular G [Gm] minor.
There's no difference really, it's just the 7.
I bar from the 3rd fret with my index finger, and on the 5th fret I put my ring finger on
the A string.
[Gb] The next chord is an F sharp augmented.
[B] Augmented chords are [N] basically major triads with a raised 5th.
They have this kind of spacey sound [Gb] to them.
I use them in everything.
[Bb] The next chord that we come across is the Eb [Eb] major 7.
So this is a pretty standard major 7 voicing.
It's barred across the 6th fret with my index finger, and then it's like an A-shaped chord,
but I take my middle finger and bring it back one fret to get that major 7.
It has that kind of feel.
I only play the root, I leave the 5th below muted.
[Bb] It resolves to a Bb major chord.
It's pretty simple, just your [Eb] regular barred major chord.
Those are actually all the chords because then it goes back to the Eb major [Gb] 7, F sharp
[Gm] augmented, and the G minor 7.
So all together it sounds like this.
[Gb] [G] [Gm] [Gb]
[Eb] [Bb] [Eb] [Gb]
[Gm] When you get to the loud part, [Bb] I switch over to the bridge pickup and just go for it.
[E] [D] [Eb] [Bb]
If you want to throw in some distortion, that usually helps.
[D] [Eb]
[Db] In the recording there's many layers of guitars, so I probably had some fuzz in [Bb] there too.
[D] [Eb]
Throw on that fuzz!
[Bb] Those chords, most of them we've actually seen before.
It's Bb major.
[D] This is a D major [Eb] chord, regular barred chord in the A shape.
I put 3 fingers on the 7th fret.
Some people do it with 1.
Whatever works for you.
Then we have that Eb major 7 again.
[Bb]
[Ebm] At the very end there's one more chord, which is the Eb minor.
[Bb] Minor 4 chord.
[Ebm]
[Bb] [Ebm] [Bb] [Ab]
So that's a glow.

Thanks so much for watching [N] and I'll see you soon.
