[Eb] Hey everybody, welcome back to HD [Eb] Piano.
This is Jeff.
Today we're going to be doing a [Cm] throwback tune called [Eb] Against All Odds, take [Cm] a look
at me now.
This one's by the great Phil Collins.
It's a really beautiful piano tune with a lot of nice chords.
It's a fun one to learn.
In this lesson we're going to be [Ebm] checking out the intro, which is short and sweet.
[Eb]
[Ab] [Ebm]
[Ab] That's it for the intro.
A really beautiful, [Eb] nice little piano riff to learn.
We're going to separate the hands on this one.
Let's start with the right hand first.
The first little phrase is this.
[Bb] [F]
[Eb] We start by playing three black notes [C] right around middle C here.
[Bb] We have a B flat, [Bbm] D flat, [Eb] and E flat.
This is sort [Bbm] of an E flat [Ab] minor seven chord.
For those that are interested, we're in the key of D flat here.
[Ebm] Here's some of the notes from an E flat minor seven chord.
We're going to play those three black notes, then we're going to go down to an [Ab] A flat,
[Bb] B flat, [Gb]
up to a G flat, [Dm] and F natural.
[Bb] Try to play those notes with me.
Three black notes, [Gb] [Fm]
[E] and then our rhythm for that phrase is [Ab] one E [Gb] and a two [F] E and.
[Bb] Try that.
[F]
Great.
Then the next little piece of the phrase is this.
[Ab] [Fm]
Again, [Db] we have two black notes here, D [Eb] flat, E flat.
[Ab] Then we're going to go up to an A flat single [G] note, hang on to that A flat, and then play
a C natural, middle C.
[Ab]
[G]
[Bb] That rhythm is three [G] E and four.
[Ab] Again, three E and four.
If we put that right [E] hand together, it'll sound like this.
[Bb]
One E [F] and a two E [Ab] and three [Fm] E and four.
Let's try it one more [Bb] time.
[Gb] [F]
[Ab] [G]
[Bb] The second measure starts the same way,
[Gb] [F] but instead [Ab] of this part, we're just going to
play an A flat triad in root position.
A flat, C, E flat.
Let's try the whole right hand.
[Bb] One [Ebm] E and a [F] two E [Ab] and three [G] E and four.
[Bb] One E [Ebm] and a [F] two E [Ab] and three and four and.
Right here, I want you to pause the video, go back, make sure you have the right [Gb] hand.
Maybe back here, we're going to add the left hand, which is pretty easy.
The three notes in the [Eb] left hand are an E flat, low E flat, octave up E flat, and then
down [Ab] a fifth to A flat.
Our rhythm here [Eb] is going to be one and two [Ab] and three and four.
The second measure is the [Eb] same thing.
One and two [Ab] and three and four.
Get used to that.
Then when you're ready, meet me here and [Gb] we're going to put the hands together nice and slow,
which will sound like [Eb] this.
One [Ebm] E and a two [Eb] E and [Ab] three [Ab] E and four.
[Eb] One E [Ebm] and a two E and [Ab] three and four.
Let's [Eb] try it a little bit faster.
[Ab] One E and a [Eb] two E and [Ab] three E and four.
[Ab] One E [Ebm] and a two E and three four.
Little faster and I'm going to add a little sustain pedal now.
[Ebm]
[Eb] [Ab]
[Ebm] [Eb]
[Ab] All right, that was the intro to Against All Odds by Phil Collins.
Great [Eb] job.
Stick around, we got a lot more coming up for this tune.
We got a verse, [Dm] a chorus, and we're going to talk about the outro, [C] and then we'll do
the whole [Eb] song run through.
Check those parts out.
