[A] Last time I showed you how to start your very own vampiric black metal [Bb] band.
Now that you have [G] probably released your first song and [Dm] noticed that it got way too many streams to be [Am] considered true cult,
[Bb] you might feel like having to step [C] aside from the limelights of [G] black metal [Dm] stardom.
_ So [A] what is the natural next step on [Em] my career, [Bb] you may ask?
The [G] only acceptable answer is to start [Dm] your very own dungeon synth [Am] solo project.
[G] Dungeon synth is a subgenre of [C] dark ambient.
[G] It basically just takes [Dm] the aesthetics of black metal and [A] applies them into a synth-driven [F] ambient [G] setting. _
If you want to be true dungeon, all you need [E] is a [Dm] neat retro synth.
_ [Am] But since most black metal career [C] musicians are pro-KF, you might have [G] to settle for a free digital VST [Dm] synth.
_ Dungeon [C] synth songs are usually long and [Bb] droning.
They can either be extremely [C] simplistic with just one [G] synth melody [Dm] carrying throughout the whole track,
[Am] or they can build up to more orchestral, [G] epic compositions.
_ _ The songwriting often follows the [Dm] same patterns as black metal.
[C] You can use somber [Am] minor [Bb] key melodies and lots of dissonance to [Am] add to the creepy atmosphere [G] of your dungeon [A] synth song.
_ If you are going to add percussion, you should [Bb] stay away from using a traditional drum kit.
[G] Instead, you can just use a [Dm] timpani sample.
You can also [Am] experiment by reversing [Gm] different sounds and samples and adding them [C] to your song.

_ _ [Dm] _ Other instruments [A] that are often [Em] heard in dungeon synths are strings, _ _ harpsichord, _ bells _ [D] and brass.
[F] _ _
[Dbm] _ _ [Gb] _ _ [Bb] You can either use [C] tons of reverb [G] to get an epic, [D] cathedral-like feeling,
[A] or if you want that sweet, dry [F] prison [Bb] mix, you can just leave the reverb [G] completely out.
_ [E] For the band [Dm] name, it can either be similar to [Am] your black metal project,
or [C] you can go with something more poetic.
You can even take inspiration from Lord of the [Dm] Rings or Norse mythology.
_ [C] _ Remember to design [Bb] your cover art so that it fits [F] a cassette,
[C] since you will [G] only ever release [Dm] dungeon synth on cassette tape.
[Am] Seriously, you are a total [C] poser if you even consider anything else.
