[A] Hi, John Dryer with Fender.
In this video, we're going to talk about dialing in tone
for punk style guitar.
[A] There's really no right or wrong way
[Eb] to set up your rig, no matter what style of music you play.
And there's really no definitive punk rock tone recipe.
We'll hopefully get you started down the right road
to the tone you're looking for.
For classic punk distortion, if your amp has minimal tone
shaping capabilities and blending controls,
a basic distortion or fuzz pedal can still
supplement a rig nicely.
Realistically, a high gain amp is often
the only thing you need.
Plug your guitar in and go.
But here, we'll take a look at the amp distortion pedal combo.
Here's one example using a loud Fender Twin Reverb amp, 85 watts.
Depending on the venue you're playing
or where you might be recording, you
can go a couple different routes.
One, just crank it.
You might need to lower your bass control
and raise your treble a bit, but [A] just go ahead and crank it.

[D] [G]
[A] Two.
Three.
And then try throwing something in front of the amp
to boost it even further, like a Big Muff or a DS-1 distortion
for a big, loud tone.
I'm using this Fender Distort pedal with the volume cranked
and the gain set just a little bit lower to get a nice boost.

[A] [N] Another option, keep the volume on the amp lower
and throw a distortion or fuzz pedal in front of it.
Again, I'm using the Fender Distortion pedal
with the amp set fairly clean.
You can roll back and forth on the guitar's volume
knob to vary the tone.

By adjusting your EQ settings, bass, mid, and treble,
you can also shape your tone depending on the style
of punk you like to play.
For example, try boosting or cutting your mids
and altering the treble.
The EQ controls on the pedal are still
another option to shape your tone just the way you want it.
For a more compact setup, let's check out the Fender Mustang
3 using stock preset number 41.
This tone is already dialed in, and you can shape it
from there however you want.
