How To Charleston 1920's style - Lesson 1 (Solo Charleston) chords
Start Jamming...
And action!
Good afternoon, evening, ladies and gentlemen, flappers and shakes.
I'm going to teach you how to dance the 1920s Charleston.
I'm going to give you some solo dancing and some partner dancing,
and we're doing it all in one take.
So please excuse the gaffs and errors along the way.
First of all, have your vintage gramophone players at the ready.
Get them on eBay.
Get [N] some old 78s shellacs.
And you can take these anywhere.
Don't need electricity.
Just a bit of elbow grease,
winding up the old gramophone.
[C]
[Ab] We'll start with a [D] Charleston stomp.
[G] [A]
[E]
[A]
[D] [A] [C]
[D] [A]
[Gb]
[A]
[D] [Am]
[Em] [Db] OK, so there we have the Charleston [G] stomp.
I'm going to teach you that.
It's the easiest of the Charleston,
[N] originating from a line dance.
It's a later creation.
And [G]
we'll show you the original 20s [Eb] Charleston footwork.
But to get you going, [N] this is the easiest.
It's the same as the original,
only you're just starting on a different foot.
We'll go over it from scratch.
Start off, we step forward on the right,
back together, back on the left,
together, forward, right, together, back, left,
tap, right, arms in the air,
behind, play it together,
tap, left, twice,
behind, turn, together.
Then we go again, we go forward,
[G]
[N] back, left, tap, once,
[F] behind, [G] replace, together,
and left, left, behind, left, [Eb] right, [N] together.
As we step forward, you swing the arms to the right.
So you [Ab] step on the right, one,
[N] and one, two, three, back, six, seven.
Then we go tap, arms in the air,
behind, and replace, tap again,
tap, and again, behind, and [G]
so far, so good.
Let's look at the footwork [N] on that.
Remember, you can rewind these to the steps
or click on the right option on your DVD.
So the footwork.
Let's start with your heels together,
toes on the balls of your feet,
heel out, and in, out, and in.
Do that facing this way, it's nice to face you.
So heels together, and you go arms, arms.
As we step forward on the right,
we're gonna bring the heels out.
When you start off, the right foot behind [G] the left,
toe to heel.
As you step forward, the heel goes out,
in, out, [Eb] so one, and two, and three, and [F] four.
[E]
[Ab]
[Eb] [A] [Ab] Now, we've got some variation on the hands
you can do as well.
[Eb] As you swing in the arm, you can make jazz hands.
So we go, a one, two, three, and five, six, [Gb] seven.
A one, two, three, and five, six, seven.
And with the [G] arms, you can wave them in the air.
A one, [Eb] two, three, five, six, seven.
A one, two, three, five, six, seven.
So there's lots [A] of variation on them.
[Eb]
So, the reaching up, we're going reach, [F] reach,
[F] as you tap behind and [Eb] reverse, reach, tap.
Now as you dance, you can add [G] different moves in,
crazy knees, [Gb] walking around.
And I'll put a few of those in now,
[N] before we move on to the next section,
which is the Charleston Stampede.
[G]
[C] [Ab]
[D]
[G] [E]
[A]
[Gb] [Am]
[A] [D]
[A] [C]
[D] [A]
[E] [B]
[A] [D]
[Am]
[Ab] [F]
So, you've got that sort of thing.
