How To Build Guitar Speed chords
Start Jamming...
I'm [B] trying to increase the speed of [A] my scale runs.
[F] And my speed is also a little bit.
Let's hear [Gb] some.
[B]
[Ab] Play [E] that again.
[Ab]
[B] [G]
So your goal [Am] is to do what?
To increase the speed?
Increase [G] the speed.
I'm not playing the same.
All right.
What's holding you back right now is your right hand.
[F] [Gb] That's the main obstacle for you right now.
Can you play it [D] again without looking at the left hand?
[B]
[E] [B] [N]
[B]
[F]
[Bb] [E] So I don't want you to think about 18 individual picking
motions, which is what you're doing right now.
You're doing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, [C] 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, [D] 12, 13, 14,
15, 16, [B] 17, 18.
We don't want that.
[E] We want to basically reduce [Db] all of that.
Well, actually, it would be 13, because on the first string,
we're going to have one extra.
So 13 events in this hand, not 18.
So it's going to be like this.
[Bb] 1, 2, [C] [D]
[G] 1 event, not 2.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, [A] 6, 7, [Bb] [E] 8, 9, [F] 10, 11, [Db] 12.
So basically what we're doing is every time we change strings,
it's a sweep picking motion.
Sweep picking does not mean down and then down again.
It means down and all strings under that sweep are hit.
[G] Make sense?
So that's what has to happen.
So in order to practice that, we're going to do this.
[N] [E]
OK, now we're going to go.
[Bb]
[D] [Bb]
[B] You've got the right idea.
You're on the right track.
You are doing it with one [N] motion, basically.
But the last note is occurring too quickly.
So you have to slow it down a little bit
so that we don't hit the final note before it's time.
But the idea is right.
Try it again.
[D] Whoa.
The faster you play, the harder it is going
to take [G] you to master this.
You need to slow down, because your brain needs time to think.
[D]
[Bb]
[D]
[G] [E]
[Ab]
[F] Yeah, you got it.
Yeah, just hold [Bb] on.
[C] It just needs to get a little smoother,
but you've got the whole [E] principle of it.
It's easier to just go through all the strings
when [Eb] you don't have to make 18 events [N] happen to play 18 notes.
If [Ab] you do that, the playing becomes [E] very [Bb] smooth and fluid.
There's not a bunch of [C] other.
[D]
Yes, there are.
[N] But you asked me about the speed.
And the first obstacle that you have in front of you
right now to play faster is the right hand.
So what you need to do now is what we just talked about,
to reduce the number of events that this hand has to carry out.
That will automatically make the speed a little faster
and cleaner.
The next thing that you have to do regarding the lick
that you played is you've got some kind of strange problem
with this first knuckle of your index finger
where it's collapsing.
And I'm not sure even how you do it.
But it's collapsing when you play.
We don't want that.
[D] OK.
Now, take the two-fifths down there. [A] Yeah, yeah.
[Bb]
[A]
[B] [F] See, right there, it just happened.
[Db] When you went to the fifth string, that knuckle collapsed.
[Gb] So you don't have to use a lot of power or [Ab] strength here.
Just like as soon as any tension at all [Db] in the knuckle came up.
Well, then use less pressure.
[Abm] Can you do this?
Can you hold it there?
[Ab] Tension.
Can you hold it there with no tension or very, very, very little?
Not really.
Let's try.
[B] [Ab] There, you did it.
I heard a clear note.
Yeah, but my hand was just kind of rigid.
Well, relax.
Relax your shoulder and your left hand.
Relax all that stuff.
OK, really relax.
Keep it arched.
You only have to use enough strength to make
the note come out clear.
Any strength besides that is a complete waste.
I mean, little girls can rip on the [Db] violin.
So that means that we should be able to play this [Ab] too.
Right.
[G] [Ab] That's it.
That's it.
You want to keep the integrity of the arch of the fingers intact.
That's all.
OK, when you do that, it will also become a little smoother
and a little, it'll be better for you [G] for many reasons.
So that's the second thing.
