Well, the word wonder has a lot of meaning and you can keep wondering what a wonder
I think it just fits the musical view that I have for this project
[Ab]
[Ab]
I have the concept for this music for few years now and have [Bb] been looking for the right musicians
Who has the sound that I [Ab] imagined
I started writing the music of this album
[Bb] in about 2019
And it includes two tracks from the project I did during the pandemic time called One Minute Portrait
[Db] [Dbm]
[Bb] Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, let's get ready for
Harumi's Sonic Wonder
[D] [Ab] [C] [Bb]
Well, the bass [Fm] player was the easiest part I [Bbm] played with Hadrian in 2016 for the first time and
[Fm] I just [Ab] felt really strong chemistry [C] and he's known by his [F] virtuosity
and amazing techniques and all the videos online
are kind of [Ab] featuring that part
[Bb] but I believe his real strength is
beyond that I think he [Bbm] just really plays the bass I mean
the bass which supports the music
the melody and he's someone who can really shine the soloists
and
[E] his harmonic [Gb] concept is really [Abm] inspiring and
[Bb] That was what amazed me the most when I played with [Ab] him and he kind of inspired [Bbm] me to write music for this project
Then I started looking for the drummer who has [Bb] very warm
and organic sound
[D] But at the same [Bb] time who has high [E] energy
[Bb] I found Gene
[Eb] he plays music with
[F] such a joy and
humor and I love that
and whenever I play with him
his drumming really makes you smile and
[Db] He fulfills me
with
[G] the joy of music
[F] and happiness
And the last piece was a trumpet [Bb] player
I was looking for someone who has [Dm] very warm
But at the same time a little [Gm] darker sound
beautiful [F] tone and can have
a punchy sound
[Bb] when it needs to be and
[D] Who [Dm] can play through the effect
[Gm] Was a tough one, but I found Adam [Dm] fortunately
[D] When I listen to his sound [Bb] I feel like i'm flying in [G] the sky
[C] such an inspirational [Dm] sound and
Just with [Gm] one note he can make you cry
They really [D] went beyond my imagination
and from the [Abm] first show
We had [D] an amazing chemistry together [C] and I still remember
The [D] audience's reaction when we played
The first show and told them that it was [E] our very first time playing together [Db] live
I feel really [Dm] grateful that they're always there with full focus
[C] And really looking for something [G] new [B] every night and no auto piloting
[C] And loving the adventure
[Bb] [B] [F] [Eb] I sent sheet music and demos before the first rehearsal
So everyone was ready to play
And [Db] we did 12 shows back to back before the recording [F] session
[Bbm] And everyone was playing [Eb] without the sheet music already by the last [Bb] show
So it was very easy to slide into the recording session
[F] [Ab] [Db] [Eb]
What I [Bb] really like about Harumi's music is that it's very direct and very [Ab] clear
[Bb] There's there's nothing overly
Unnecessarily complicated about her music which leaves [Fm] more room
For the band to really
[Cm] add a lot of
[Dbm] Unexpected and [C] spontaneous detail
In the way we each approach our role [Eb] in the band
How did I [Abm] approach learning Harumi's new compositions?
[Eb] Uh, well first the first [Bm] thing to do is listen, you know listen
[Fm] uh deeply [Ab] and
[Db] You know listen with an intent
[Ebm] to digest the [Bb] music
Oh, I admire her music [Ab] because she just takes risks and she you know, [Dbm] she's very true [Ebm] to herself
[Dbm] And I admire [Eb] anybody who can be themselves in any situation
It's a journey.
It's a true journey.
And I think it's [Db] a really fun [Eb] journey
Happy [Bb] to be here.
Even if you can't see [Fm] it on my face
Because it's the [Eb] end of the day, but I am
[Dbm] Very excited [B] actually
this is
[Fm] Composed through yet very open
[Ab] Which is typically the type of [Db] music that musicians
[Ab] musicians like me
Appreciate I guess we can we can stretch, you know a good deal and uh, Harumi is [Db] very open about [F] many things.
So, you know, she
She'll present a piece to us and then we you know, we make suggestions
I mean most [Gb] most of the time she's already spot on [F] on the writing so we don't have much change
[Bb] You know, but um
[Ab]
It's uh, you know, [Db] there's harmony
[Ab] Melody rhythm there's everything in this music.
So we can all we have to [Eb] do is it's [Ab] easy
We we just play it.
We just interpret at this point
And [Eb] bring a little [Cm] something to it
I went to berkeley with him
[F] and
Always have been a big fan of his music
and we've been [G] great friends since then and
In [F] 2021
I wrote this piece called reminiscence
And heard [Am] him singing in my head
So [Cm] I called him [Am] and said I [Gm] have this song [F] that I just wrote and i'm hearing [Eb] your voice
And would you like to co-write the lyrics?
[C] So we co-wrote the lyrics together
[F] We didn't [Bb] really have [F] any plan to release it back [A] then but we [G] finished writing the song together
Anyway to you know, just for fun
Then I thought [Am] the song would be perfectly fitting
with the sound of this band
[Gm] So we decided to [Eb] record it on this album and i'm so [G] happy with how it turned out
Hiromi and I [F] met at berkeley over 20 years ago.
I can't really believe it was such a long [A] time ago now
[F] It was a really special time
and um
The older I get and the more time passes [Dm] the more special I realize
[F] It is you know, and that was the time
[Bb] Where I when I met Hiromi and it's a very [Gm] special time in your [F] life because you're
Developing and learning so much
It's really [C] it makes this collaboration even more special [F] that it was, you know all that time ago
at college together and that's already a very special time in
[Gm] In one's life, so the song is a way to also [Dm] remember that time of being [D] young and being in music
[F] uh university together
[Bb] [Ab]
[Abm] [Ab] Depending [Db] [Ab] on your own
Experience as a listener
[Fm] you're gonna kind [F] of perceive it a different way I would [Ab] describe it as
a [Fm] harmonious blend of
Sound and style [Eb] and now it's uh, it's [Ab] it's a masterpiece.
Let's [Ab] say it i'm done.
[Eb] Bye
