Hippo Campus interview at SXSW chords
Start Jamming...
To, well right here on my side, we have Whistler and we have Nathan from Hippo Campus.
How are you guys doing today?
Doing pretty good.
Doing pretty dandy.
It's hot.
It is hot because we're at South by Southwest, we're not in Minnesota.
But it's nice to bump into our buddies from Minnesota in a different place.
I know.
Pleasure.
Pleasure is all ours.
Pleasure is all ours.
In the beautiful city of Austin.
And it's going crazy.
It's just as crazy as we remember, probably.
We're not even in the thick of it yet though, so maybe I'll bite my tongue.
What's your favorite thing about South by Southwest?
The babes.
Sure.
Probably.
The food.
The food's delicious.
I mean, babes A, free shoes B, tacos.
Tacos.
We got tacos this morning, or this afternoon.
It's tacos every time of day.
That's what Austin's all about.
And running into your heroes at the taco stand, it's like, oh, I'm getting the chorizo taco as well.
We have so much in common, you know?
And then you connect and you guys get each other's pager numbers, fax numbers.
Who's your hero that you would love to bump into at the taco shop?
You.
Oh, well, we can make that happen.
Dreams coming true at South by Southwest.
Hopefully.
All right, we're going to play a little game, dudes.
So you're going to go in here, pull out, it's kind of pick your poison.
We're going to do a total of three and then you're going to put it in my hand.
Yeah.
A total of so one of us has to get two.
Yeah.
Or you guys can do it together.
Whatever.
Let's do one together.
When both of your hands touch.
This is so romantic all of a sudden.
Hippocampus.
We're always romantic.
All right, let's try number one.
See this is what real fans do.
What a sweetheart.
I know, just a bunch of sweethearts.
Ooh, all right.
We're getting deep immediately.
You guys ready for this?
Take a deep breath.
Who wrote this?
Think.
Oh, all of us.
While we were kind of loopy on the way down, we drove down.
Loopy.
Yeah, it's a euphemism of sorts.
But we drove down from Minnesota to Dallas and on that 14 hour tour, we came up with
a couple of questions for you guys.
What was a decision that changed the course of your life?
Oh, geez.
I told you we were getting deep.
Whatever is the first thing that pops into your mind is probably what it is.
We covered, way back in high school, the first thing we ever did together.
We covered Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
It was how we met, really.
It was kind of how we met, yeah.
Long story short, man, life changed.
Wait, how did you meet?
I want a slightly longer story.
I remember seeing, well, there was like the orientation day or whatever.
The first day we saw each other, we both remember that.
I saw this purple v-neck crossing the street with some bleached Hot Topic.
A pow belt buckle.
Long hair, just couldn't see his face at all.
As emo as the
You were wearing that Target Mossimo shirt.
I was expressed out.
With your little fedora hat.
Yeah, I was wearing a fedora or something.
Mr.
Mraz.
It's a hard phase.
Yeah, I was too scared to go up to him because he looked so dang cool.
Later on, we were in some instrumental class and it was like, well, we could do this cool
cover of this song that I heard one time.
It's not that big or anything.
Somewhere over the rainbow, you know.
It's in that one movie.
Yeah, so that's kind of it.
That's the gist.
Yeah.
Well, I'm glad it happened so that you guys could connect.
Yeah.
And we could be here right now.
Trip down memory lane.
Oh, man, you guys grabbed all the really intense ones.
People are really Okay.
We are intense.
I'm just going to say, these are coming up quite [D] frequently today, but [C] if you could relive
one day in your life, what would it be?
Would it be that day?
The day I was born.
Only with your memories now.
It was stressful, but man, the payoff.
I could relive one day.
This weekend was really dope in Minnesota.
Oh, yeah.
Coming off the big back to back sold out at First Avenue.
Congratulations on that, by the way. Thank you.
Thank you.
It was fun.
Yeah, it's pretty tough, you know, choosing one day out of the many that we've had.
Had so many good days.
That's a good problem to [D] have.
Yeah, maybe.
Too many good days.
You know, I'm all about the present.
Let's just
I'd do today all over again.
Today all over again.
Nice.
Up till now.
This all over again.
I'll do the same thing.
All of us all together.
We're so cheap.
All right.
Oh, this ties back into our earlier conversation.
Breakfast, lunch, or dinner tacos, and why?
Breakfast.
Breakfast, anything all the time for me.
What's your go-to flavor?
Are you like This morning.
Bacon, egg, and cheese, or is there like Migos?
What's your
Yeah, so this morning we went to the taco shop and I got a breakfast taco, and I got chorizo.
If they ever have chorizo, that's always like
Are you salsa heavy?
I am actually not a salsa guy.
Oh, that's smart.
I just like it as it is.
I don't condone his behavior.
They make it and then you just eat it.
You don't add anything to it.
Whatever, bro.
That's me.
I'm a purist of sorts.
Yeah, but you eat breakfast tacos.
They weren't even made for breakfast.
[F#] Purist, whatever.
You ate the breakfast tacos.
I like breakfast tacos, but like for real, [N] dinner tacos at home, and you make them yourself,
and you got some homemade pico.
Man, I can't get over that.
Like cilantro in the morning is good, but
Man, I can't get over that.
Like cilantro in the morning is good, but cilantro to cap off a really nice day.
Cilantro at the end of the day, that's what gets me, I think.
You should just have it by the bedside.
Chop off a little bit.
Right.
Last thing that touches your tongue.
It crawls up my walls in the bedroom.
Fine.
Well, we are live at South by Southwest, and we are joined by members of Hippo Campus.
And one last question for you guys.
We've been asking this of everybody, and it's kind of nice, you guys coming fresh off of First Avenue.
As Minnesotans, a lot of people have been reflecting on Prince, especially this last
year since it's almost a year since he passed away.
Do you guys have any thoughts, any reflections as Minnesotan musicians about Prince?
Rest in Prince.
I don't know.
Honestly, I never really listened to Prince's music growing up.
I was never even a
I wouldn't even consider myself a fan.
I respect him, though.
I respect the hell out of him.
Going back to another story of meeting, Jake and I bonded off of Kiss, the song Kiss by Prince.
Really?
But other than that, I never really listened to Prince.
I think I had the Batman soundtrack that he made.
Oh, yeah.
That was about it.
So it's tough to say, you know?
Respect the hell out of him.
He did some amazing things.
I didn't really grow up in Minnesota either.
See, I did.
So that's where
Yeah, well, you have no excuses, man.
Shame on me, right?
Yeah.
Well, we're going to go, and we're going to dive deep and listen to some Prince as soon
as we're done here.
Oh, okay.
We'll go grab a taco, listen to Prince.
I'm down, dude.
I'm down.
Let's go listen to some Prince.
I got nothing else to do today.
Yeah, exactly.
We are live at South by Southwest Hippocampus.
Thank you guys so much for joining us.
And thanks for watching.
