[C] [Bb] [E] Hi, it's John again and I'm still sick.
[N] But that's okay because today's [Ab] artist is the [Eb] Electrifying Campana.
Always wanted to say that.
They'll be here in a minute.
Thank you to VOLVE for my shirt, my new sponsor.
And they're great.
Go visit them.
I'm going to put the website address at the bottom of the [N] page.
Thank you everybody for supporting the show and [C] looking forward to this episode a lot.
[G] Thanks.
[Bm]
[C] [G]
[C] [G] [Bm]
[C] Okay.
[Gm] Hello, I'm [Bb] here.
We're going to talk instruments [Dbm] real quick.
[D] Oh, it's a Campana.
That's quite an [A] awesome drum [Eb] set you have.
Yeah, this is an [C] MPC-1000.
[N] That sounds very technical.
What does it do for the layperson?
Basically it has live drum samples in it that get triggered every time I hit one of these pads.
Nice.
Basically.
So here, let's see.
What kind of bass are you playing?
This is a Warrior.
And I like the pink strings.
Thank you.
My daughter would be very impressed.
She's a big Pink's fan as well.
Cool.
And it's a four- What?
Five-string.
Wow, rock and five-string.
That's impressive.
Cool.
Wow.
And I just realized, tuner, strings, [Bb] shoes.
[G] All coordinated.
[C] Good job.
Thank you.
[G]
[C] [G] [D]
[C] [G]
[C] [G] [Bm]
[C] [G]
[C] [G] What kind of ukulele are you playing nowadays?
This [Bm] is a Kanilea.
Joe and Kristen Suza, [C] my friends down there in Kane'ohe.
That's a very nice one.
Is that a koa?
[D] It's all koa, yeah.
[Abm] I know everybody was going through [N] this phase of different woods, but it seems like everybody's coming back to koa now.
Yeah, I believe, you know, I used to have like mango and different kinds of, but sweat and I played so much that it was kind of not a hard enough wood for- Yeah.
You'd get holes in them and you know-
Can I play the koa?
Yeah, yeah, the koa has worked really nice.
Cool, man.
Yeah.
[G]
[Bm]
[C] [G] La-la-la-la-la-la.
Okay, I'm here with the band, Kapana, but I'm also [Bb] Kapana.
I mean, Killie Boy, Lilo and [N] Kalena.
And thank you guys for coming on the show.
Really appreciate it.
We're going to do our three-minute interview starting now, which I'm going to actually kind of hijack because I want to ask Killie Boy a question.
Okay.
These children are very talented.
Did you know that they were talented early on or was it something that was developed?
Because I have a five-year-old [E] girl and she sings all the time and I'm thinking that she probably has more of mom's genes than mine.
So I don't know if it's like going to develop later [Cm] or were they right off the bat, boom, [Abm] that you knew they were musical?
All three kids were different.
Actually, right off the bat, I knew Kapana was going to be a [E] performer.
[Cm] At five years old, he was going around [N] from gig to gig with me and we would play in downtown Olaulea.
I'd call him up to come up and do his little jig on the stage.
And he would dance and people would throw money on the stage and whatnot.
And then it was Kalena, my middle one, she came right out of left field.
She was like, I don't know, we weren't looking at her and then all of a sudden this voice came out.
Oh, interesting.
And then Lilo was the one that always came to the show as the little baby watching her brother and sister perform on stage and saying,
Dad, when am I going to get my chance to make some money and get up on stage with you?
And that's pretty much how it started.
Okay, that makes a lot of sense.
There's still hope for mine.
Oh, yeah.
And so let me ask the kids, how's it playing with Dad?
Is he a slave driver or is he pretty bella?
It's so funny that [Cm] you use that term.
[G] That's exactly what we want to hear.
[Ab] Oh, really?
[N] It's his thing they know.
Now that I think about it, Kapana was known as the gigging band, the [Eb] really hardworking band even back in the day.
So that's like, I'm sure that just translated over to now, right?
[G] How he treats you guys now.
Yeah.
And how many gigs are you doing a week [N] nowadays?
10.
Oh my gosh.
10 to [Gm]
12.
I give you guys so much credit.
I mean, but it pays off because you guys sound amazing.
Thank you so much.
Let's see, Nick, do you have [N] any thoughts?
Speaking of, well, then let's just ask them, where can people find you on a weekly basis?
You can go to our website, wouldbethebest, kapana.com, and we have a calendar there.
Or else you can just come down.
We play at all the hotels in Waikiki from Monday through Friday.
Well, actually from [Abm] Sunday to Friday, Kapana plays the grand piano at the Moana [G] Hotel on Sundays.
We perform as a family [N] on Mondays at the Hale Kulani.
Tuesdays, [B] Lilo and I perform at the Purchase Ka Iolani, and Kapana plays across the streets [N] on the grand piano at the Moana.
Then Wednesday, it's Kalena and I at the Moana Hotel.
And then Thursday, it's myself, my wife actually is a part of the mix also.
One day a week, she works with [B] us over at the Royal Hawaiian, [Ab] so it's myself, Lilo, and my wife, [Abm] Leo, at the Royal.
And then on Friday, it's Lilo and I that [N] do a duo at the Sheraton Waikiki.
Wow, okay.
Well, very cool.
We'll come check you out, and thanks again for being on the show.
See you guys.
Thank you so much, guys.
