Hank Williams Jr. Rattles the Country Establishment During Hall of Fame Speech chords
Start Jamming...
Hank [G] Williams Jr.
was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on November 21, his class
of [C] 2020 fellow members, Marty Stewart and Dean Dillon, joining the country music icon.
While Stewart and Dillon's [G] speeches were more traditional, [C] Williams gave a speech very
on brand to the outlaw.
We've got the video to prove it.
[D] I'm Adison [Bb] Haker and [A] hit that thumbs [G] up button if you are a fan of Hank Williams [D] Jr.'s.' songs. In fact, what's your favorite song of his? Let's get that conversation going in the comment [G] section below. And now [F] is the part of our videos where I make sure you're subscribed to our [G] channel and that notifications button is [C] on so you never miss out on [Am] the latest country music [Bb] breaking news. Well, the good thing is this didn't happen yesterday, [Eb] [C] which was the opening day of deer season. Yeah, no country music Hall of Fame induction is going to get [Gbm] in the way [G] of the singer's hunting schedule. If you've ever stumbled upon the singer's Instagram page, you'd know he's a pretty big outdoorsman, [Fm] even [G] taking [C] a minute in the beginning of his speech to sing the praises of his [D] grandson's recent hunting kill. Quote, I led [Bb] my grandson to get [A] his [G] first deer. Ole Hank is in the hunting guide Hall of Fame too. I have taught many young and old [C] the sport of hunting. [C] These are memories [G] I am thankful for and they will never fade. The singer's speech was short, a solid one [Dm] minute and 48 seconds to be [Bb] exact. [Am] To put into [C] perspective time-wise, fellow country music Hall of Fame inductee Marty [Bb] Stewart spread his remarks over 13 minutes and Dean [Eb] Dillon spoke for eight. [Bb] So yeah, Williams wasn't here for embellishment. After his proud deer [C] hunting moment, the singer pivoted. [Fm] [B] A lot of people to [D] thank. They know who they are. That part about the family with the [F] open arms, well, that might've been a little bit different in my [A] case. Oh boy. This might have made a few wiggle in their seats, but hey, Williams has long considered himself an outsider in the country music [F] community. [G] Although he has returned [C] for cameos at events like the CMA Awards and to applaud fellow [Dm] musicians from time to time. [Bb] Many believe [Am] that the only thing keeping [Bb] the five-time entertainer of the year [Eb] out of the hall was his attitude towards the modern institution of country music. Instead of [Bb] pulling another arrow from his quiver, the 72-year-old inductee pivoted and closed. But, [F] uh, I went to Muscle Shoals, Alabama and [D] all my friends are coming over tonight. I was born to boogie and this is a family tradition. Brenda Lee presented Williams with his Country Music Hall of Fame medallion [G] after three performances [C] from fellow artists to honor the singer. Shooter Jennings, the [G] son of Waylon Jennings, [Dm] performed Feeling Better. [Bb] Alan Jackson [Am] performed [C] The Blues Man [Bb] and Eric Church performed A [C] Country Boy Can't Survive, which I want to touch especially on Church's performance for a minute. The fellow country outlaw has been vocal of how he looks up to Williams and got to establish that further during the awards night. As he sang A Country [Gb] Boy Can't [C] Survive, a very popular Williams number, [G] [A] [D] he [A] delivered the lyrics sitting on a stool and accompanied by only his acoustic guitar. We can skin a [Em] buck, we can run a truck around, [G] and a country boy [E] can survive. [C] The country legend wrote A Country Boy Can't Survive [Eb] and it was a [Bbm] hit single, peaking inside the Billboard Hot Country [Bm] Singles Charts top [G] five. [D] It's since been covered extensively, [G] including by Church. In [C] fact, if you've ever seen Church perform live, you know A Country Boy [C] Can't Survive is a staple of Church's [D] live set and his version appears in the 2017 Record Store Day Vinyl edition [A] of his [D] Caught in the Act live album. In addition to the performance to honor Williams, Pastor Evelyn Hubbard, Emmylou Harris, Charlie Worsham and Ashley McBride performed to honor Stewart, [F] while Kenny Chesney, [G] Britney Spencer and [Bb] George Strait played for Dylan. [Am] If you have any [Bb] congratulations for Hank Williams Jr. [C] officially landing [Bb] it in the Country Music Hall of Fame, let him know in the comment section of this video [Eb] before you go. [Bb] I'm Addison Haker for Taste of Country. Thanks for watching and as always, thanks for subscribing.
