[Gb] Hi, welcome to a guitar friendly dotnet guitar [E] lesson.
My name is Brett and today
We're going to be looking [B] at 6 8 strumming patterns and 6 8 simply refers to the rhythm of a song
[Gbm] So before we've looked at songs that [E] have a 4 4 rhythm [Bb] or a 4 4 time signature
And that simply refers to how many beats per measure the song gets so we might count a 4 4 song in 1 2
3 4 1 2 and so on
But a 6 8 rhythm is counted in 6 so 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3
4 5 6 [Gb] and so on so we're going to look at today [Fm] some strumming patterns that use [N] or that fit into
a 6 8 rhythm and
To give you an idea of what it might sound like
Paramore's the only exception uses a 6 8 [B] strumming pattern and then
Jeff Buckley's hallelujah is written in a 6 8 rhythm as well.
Let's take a look
[Gbm]
We're talking [E] about strumming patterns, we really want to emphasize the importance of good time
[N] And so as we practice these exercises we want to be counting out loud
1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3
We want to internalize that because strumming isn't so much about how complicated can we be?
Or how fast can we play it, but can we lock into a consistent and steady tempo?
so
For this first exercise.
I want us to count out loud 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3
So on and we're gonna just pull do all down strums and this hand wants to be loose
We don't want to be tensing up.
We don't want to be strumming from our elbow
But we really want to loose wrist and so let's count out loud and let's just do all down strums for each beat
So 1 2 3 4 5 [B] 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6
1 2 3 4 5 6
So we want to try to be as consistent as possible
And we want to lock into that tempo and [Gb] you might notice that I'm kind of accenting
[B] The strumming on beats 1 & 4 a little bit louder because those are the strong beats of the measure
So 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3
1 and [Gb] so on [Bb] so give that a try practice that count [Eb] out loud [Gb] and just all down strums
[Dbm] [Dbm]
[Db] Once we get comfortable locking [B] into the timing with just [N] all down strums we can think about adding some up strums
So for this next exercise we want to keep a loose wrist a loose hand
Because we're going to do perpetual down up down up down up strums to the count of six
So let me play it just muted and I'll play it pretty slow so you guys can listen to this
[Gb] So 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 [Ab] 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6
1 2 3 4 5 6
So [Bb] as you can see my [Ab] hands just constantly moving
[Ab] With down up down up down up strums, but I'm playing in times 1 [Gb] 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 [Bb] 6
And again, you might notice that I was [A] accenting on beats 1 & 4
And so once you get comfortable with that, you can start actually playing a [B] chord over top of that.
So
1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6
1 2
[Bb]
So all this information about strumming patterns is pretty much useless if we don't know how to play a song
So I want to play paramours the only exception
Which [G] is in 6 8 and uses a very similar strumming pattern to the one we just learned
So if you need the chords and want to play along
You can go over to guitar friendly net and it's under the guitar chord section or you can do a search for it
[Eb] But let's take a listen
[Db]
When I was younger I saw
my daddy [Abm] cry
And curse at [Bbm] the wind.
[Db] He broke his own heart in our watch as he tried [Abm] to
Reassemble [Bbm]
[Db] my mama swore that she would never [Abm] let her self
[Bbm]
[Db] And that was the day that I promised I'd never [Abm] sing
Does [Bbm] not exist

[Abm] you are [Gb] the only
