What's going on everybody?
Today we're doing Chabelle, The Red.
Now if you're not familiar with this song, this one is in standard C sharp tuning, [F] and
I'll put it right here.
But you don't [F#] have to be in standard C sharp to play this.
You can [B] actually be in standard E.
The only thing that's going to change is it's not going
to sound [F#] as heavy, okay?
[C#] It's not going to sound so heavy and your strings aren't going to rattle so [G] much because
my strings aren't made for this tuning.
So keep that in mind, okay?
Staying [F#] in standard E is fine.
Okay, I'm going to go ahead and get ready for that close-up and grab your guitar and
let's start playing.
Okay, for the lesson I'm not going to be using the distortion at the beginning.
At the end I'll turn it on just so you can hear how the riff is going to sound.
But I'm just going to break this down clean just so it's [C#] easier to hear.
[E] [C#] [A]
[F#] Okay, so what are we doing here?
We're starting off with the first finger, seventh fret, fifth string.
The other string we're going to be, I'm sorry, the other fret we're going to be using is
the ninth fret of the same string but with the ring finger.
So seventh fret, ninth fret.
And we're going to be going back and forth on these, okay?
The other string we're using [C#] is the sixth string when you strum.
We're going to be using the sixth and fifth string together when you strum.
It's going to look like this.
[E] So what am I doing here?
Seven, seven, nine, seven.
And it's a down, down, up, down.
And you want to strum as evenly as possible.
If you're doing this, it's really wobbly on the strings, okay?
Remember we're in a lower tuning so you've got to be real even when you play.
Unless of course you have your guitar tuned that way all the time and you have it set
up with the proper strings I should say.
So seven, seven, nine, seven.
Okay so now [Fm] you add an up strum with the fifth and sixth [C#] string and you transition [E] over to this chord.
[N] What chord is this?
This is going to be a power chord on the third string, I'm sorry, third fret, first
finger, sixth string.
So fret one, fret two, fret three, sixth string, first finger.
From here to make the power chord you're going to go up one fret, two frets, one string up,
fifth string, [E] ring finger, sixth string, fifth string together.
Okay [C#] so we've got this.
[E] [C#]
[E] Now from [D] here it's the easier part.
What you do from here, since you already [E] have that one strum,
[B] you add this down, up, down,
up, down, up and it's going to be the first finger you kind of take it off and [E] on, off and on.
So it's going to go down, on, [B] up, [E] off.
[C#] So we've got this.
[E] [C#] [B]
Don't forget that transition [C#] using an upstroke with two [E] strings open to get to the new chord.
Right into that, okay [C#] so here it is.
[E]
A couple [C#] more times.
[E]
One more [C#] time.
[E]
[C#] Then you come back to 7, 7, 9, 7.
[A]
Into this chord right here [A#] which you start on fret eight, first finger, sixth string.
You walk up one fret, two frets, tenth fret, one string up, fifth string, [A] tenth fret.
Okay so what's going to happen here?
Same strum pattern, okay you're going to strum it down, down, up, down, up and on the ups
you take off that first finger.
[C#]
[A] You still have that up [F#m] strum open for [C#] the transition into the string though or into that chord.
[A] [C#m] Okay, so when you put it all together, [C#] here it is.
[E]
[C#]
[A] [E]
[C#] One more time.
[E]
[C#]
[A] [F#] Okay so now the next thing you want to do is once you get comfortable from this position
and back into the other position and back, [C#] at your own pace you want to go ahead and
pick up the speed.
Okay so the speed is going to be like this.
[E] [C#]
[A] [C#] [E]
[C#] [A]
Okay you got that.
And then of course [E] the last step, you can always add the distortion.
If you're not playing it with distortion it's not a big deal.
[A#] But let's add that distortion, see [C#] how it sounds with distortion.
[E] [C#] [A]
[C#] [E] [C#]
[A] [F#] Okay now the last thing you can do to this riff is the opening is played open.
What I mean by that, the opening of the song is played with this open kind of strum to
it but then when you get into the verse they close it off with [C#] a palm mute.
[E]
[C#] [A] [N]
So how do you do that?
You take your right hand, it's the same riff, same strum pattern, same everything but you
got to work on your right hand palm mute.
If you're too far forward on this palm mute you're going to get a mute.
I'm sorry not the mute we're looking for, we're going to get more of like a scratchier
kind of nasal mute.
The mute we're looking for is kind of a hum or a growl back here [F#] like this.
[C#] [E]
[D] So how do you get that?
[E] What you're doing is you're taking your right hand and you're [N] moving it all the way to where
your saddles meet the string.
This is my bridge over here, here are my saddles and right in front of [D] those saddles you can
[F#] put the side of your hand, the pinky area, just lay it [F#m] on there and you get that nice sound.
If you're too far forward you're going to get more of like a mute that we're not looking
for [E] or like a nasal type.
[F#m] [N] So that's something you can do, you can start over here and just move it back gradually
and find that spot.
[F#] [D] So [C#] then you just play the riff.
[E] [C#]
[A] [C#] [E]
[C#] [A] [F#]

[C#] One more time.
_ _ _ [E] _ _ _
_ [C#] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[A] _ _ _ _ [F#] _ Okay so now the next thing you want to do is once you get comfortable from this position
and back into the other position and back, [C#] at your own pace you want to go ahead and
pick up the speed.
Okay so the speed is going to be like this.
_ [E] _ _ _ [C#] _ _ _
[A] _ _ _ [C#] _ _ _ [E] _ _
[C#] _ _ _ _ [A] _ _ _
Okay you got that.
And then of course [E] the last step, you can always add the distortion.
If you're not playing it with distortion it's not a big deal.
[A#] But let's add that distortion, see [C#] how it sounds with distortion. _ _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ [C#] _ _ _ [A] _ _ _
[C#] _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ [C#] _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ [F#] Okay now the last thing you can do to this riff is the opening is played open. _
What I mean by that, the opening of the song is played with this open kind of strum to
it but then when you get into the verse they close it off with [C#] a palm mute.
_ _ [E] _ _
[C#] _ _ _ _ [A] _ _ [N] _
So how do you do that?
You take your right hand, it's the same riff, same strum pattern, same everything but you
got to work on your right hand palm mute.
If you're too far forward on this palm mute you're going to get a mute.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
I'm sorry not the mute we're looking for, we're going to get more of like a scratchier
kind of _ nasal mute.
The mute we're looking for is kind of a hum or a growl back here [F#] like this.
_ _ _ [C#] _ _ _ _ [E] _
_ _ _ [D] So how do you get that?
[E] What you're doing is you're taking your right hand and you're [N] moving it all the way to where
your saddles meet the string.
This is my bridge over here, here are my saddles and right in front of [D] those saddles you can
[F#] put the side of your hand, the pinky area, _ just lay it [F#m] on there and you get that nice sound.
If you're too far forward you're going to get more of like a mute that we're not looking
for _ [E] or like a nasal type.
_ [F#m] _ _ _ _ [N] So that's something you can do, you can start over here and just move it back gradually
and find that spot.
_ [F#] _ _ _ [D] So [C#] then you just play the riff.
_ _ [E] _ _ [C#] _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ [C#] _ _ _ [E] _ _
[C#] _ _ _ _ [A] _ _ [F#] _ _
