I heard you were a country singer for a while and you were out playing with guys like Johnny Cash and Freddie Hart.
Before Johnny Cash ever wore black, I was on the same stage with him.
And he used to sell his records out of the trunk of his car, man.
In the alley, right behind the place we were playing.
I played with Tex Ritter, Joe Maphis.
I just did an album, Joe Maphis.
They called Joe Maphis was the king of the fast hands on a double neck guitar.
He was an unbelievable picker.
And then I did a dedication song for him.
They asked me to play on his album.
He's passed on now.
And now Sunday I'll be doing one for Glenn Campbell because Glenn also played guitar for me in one of my sessions at Capitol Records.
Leo Fender, when I met Leo, I was surfing at the time and I said,
My name's Nick Dale, you know, I need a guitar and my guitar's lousy and I got no money.
Can you help me out?
And he just took a liking to me and he became like another father to me.
My dad and I were down there visiting him and he said, here, take this guitar and tell me what you think of it.
And it was a Stratocaster and he had just made the Stratocaster in 1954.
And I came to California in 54 and met Leo in 55.
So then what happened was Leo gave me the guitar and I started playing on it.
And then at that time he had like little 10 watt amplifier, 10 watt output transformer.
That's the secret of the sound is the output transformer.
And they had a little 8 inch speakers, 6 inch speakers like that, Jensen's.
And then what happened was I just started burning them up.
They're catching on fire, stuff like that.
And then we got, he says, why do you gotta play so loud?
You know, stuff like that.
I'm getting a real heavy hum.
And so anyway, he stood in the middle of finally 4,000 people and he said,
Now I know what Dick Dale's trying to tell me.
Back to the drawing board.
And he created the first 85 watt output transformer peaking 100 watts.
And we went to JBL speakers and said, we want a 15 inch speaker with about a 12 pound magnet in the back.
And I wanted the aluminum dust cover in the front of it so I could hear the click of the pick.
And then when I plugged it in and he called it a showman because I used to jump off the stage
and slide on my knees underneath the petticoats when I go, the end.
Like that.
That's the way I used to end my songs.
And they were dancing the Lindy then.
They wore about 20 things, you know.
So what happened was that was the beginning when people's ears started to bleed then.
And then I wanted to put two Lansing speakers in there.
And then he had to change the output transformer and he made a 100 watt output transformer peaking 180 watts.
And that's why they call me the father of loud.
Or the guy who created the first power amps in the world to go on and on and on.
More so than just being the king of the surf guitar.
That's what I did.
Yes.
