Excursion Round the Bay is one of those songs where if you're trying to teach a group of non-English speakers to join you in a song, that's a good one.
All you have to do is say, oh me, oh my, and off we go.
So it's been one of my favorite songs really because it's got us out of a few jams in live concert situations.
And it's also got that one weird kind of unique thing about Newfoundland folk music where, you know, the message in the song is actually quite dark.
Someone drowns and dies and people don't even realize it, I don't think, because it's such a happy tune.
So once again, the blindly optimistic Newfoundlander wins the [B] day.
[N]
Well it was on this Monday morning, the day had been calm and fine, to the harbor grease excursion with the boys to have a time.
And just before the sailors took the gang away from the pier, I saw some fellow army wave on board of the volunteer. Come on!
Oh me, oh my, I heard [E] the old one [F#] cry.
Oh me, oh my, [N] I think I'm gonna die.
Oh me, oh my, I heard the old one say, I wish I'd never taken this or stood around to beg.
We had four three hundred souls aboard who want to split in sight.
Mad, strong and regimental, so many the spirits bite.
I'd be stuck bleeding the tunnel for the funny things they'd say.
They joke themselves with laughing when they see us in the lake. Come [Bm] on!
Oh me, oh my, I heard [F#] the old one cry.
Oh me, oh my, I think [G#] I'm gonna die.
Oh me, oh my, I heard the old one say, I wish I'd never taken this or stood around to [N] beg.
Me wife, she got no better, only quite me darling dear.
The screeches from her truly you could hear in Carbonear.
I tried every place in Harbor Grease, tried every store and shop,
to get her something for her cure or take her to the hop. Come on!
Oh me, oh my, [B] I heard the old one cry.
Oh [F#] me, oh my, [E] I think I'm gonna [B] die.
Oh me, oh [E] my, I heard the old one say, [A] I wish I'd never taken this or stood around [N] to beg.
Oh me wife, she got no better, oh she turned to sickly green.
I fed her cake and candy, but what could care to see?
Castor oil and sugar and candy, I rubbed teal oil on her face.
And I said, do me a dandy when we reach this Harbor Grease city.
Oh me, oh

my, see that little old friend, recently [E] we're coming [Am] back.
And we buried her in the [E] ocean, wrapped up [Gm] in a union jacket.
[A] So now I am a single man in search of a pretty face.
And the woman says she'll have me while we're off for Harbor [B] Grease.
Oh me, oh my, I heard the old one cry.
Oh me, oh my, [E] I think I'm gonna die.
Oh me, oh my, I heard the [G#] old one say, I wish I'd never taken this or stood around to beg.

Oh [E] me, oh my, I think I'm gonna die.
Oh me, oh my, I heard the old one say, I wish I'd [B] never taken this or stood around [N] to beg.
She died below the brandies.
Should be said.
Yeah.
Off he goes.
I'm sorry, Patty Murphy, it has a happy ending.
Or has a happy quality to it.
What is wrong with us?
We're shallow people.
