[F#m] Yeah.
Let's talk about last night.
I'm Warren Haynes and the new Government Mule CD is called Shout.
We started working on Shout.
I had written [F#] about five or six songs that were ready to go and then we wrote another
five or six together that came about really quickly.
[F#m] I know you had too much to drink.
I know it was getting late.
[F#] I always tell people it's like a first date, you know, [F#m] when you're on your best behavior,
when you're first learning a song.
It means more to you at that moment than it probably ever will again in [F#] some weird sort of way.
[D#]
[A#m] [D#]
[D#m]
Mule hasn't recorded in quite a few years.
The last record we did was something [G] like 2009, I believe.
Having just taken a year off, which I think was a really rejuvenating sort of experience for us.
Government Mule has never had a year off in its entire existence.
[D] It just kind of allowed us to really think [E] in a more [N] focused way what kind of record
we wanted to make.
You know, like any artist or band, you want to kind of break new [D] ground and not repeat yourself.
And so for us with each record, we like to go into a [A] place musically that we've never gone before.
And it's kind of in honor of great rock and roll [C] vocalists.
But originally it was just going to be a Government Mule CD.
We hadn't thought about any special guests [Dm] or any [Bm] surprises.
[Em]
[Bm] [C#] [Bm]
[G] And [D#] so I don't know if it was that night or a couple of nights later, it's like 3 a.m.
I'm sitting up looking at all the song titles [G] and the idea occurred to me, what if I just
go through this list of songs and pick who would I like to hear other than myself sing each song?
The original concept I was thinking maybe would be duets, but then like, nah, [D] rock and
roll duets, it's [E] kind of like an oxymoron.
It's kind of like jumbo shrimp in my opinion.
I thought, well, what if [F#m] we do two discs of the [D] same songs and there's our version and
there's a version with guest vocalists.
People have done [G] duets, people have done stuff with guest artists [B] and all this kind of stuff,
but nobody had really done [G] this.
[A] And now your new lover has left your heart and dried out, [F#] I say.
[Em] It's a funny little [G] tragedy.
[E] A funny little [G] tragedy.
[E] A funny little tragedy.
[G] [A] Yeah.
[G] The vocalists that appeared on our record are all people that we've admired [D#] for [G] a long time.
Ben Harper, who we've worked with before, Dave Matthews.
Steve Wynwood is perhaps one of my [B] idols, [D] for want of a better [Em] word.
I had been emailing [G] back and forth with Elvis Costello about Small Talk and this and that.
From that point forward, [E] I started thinking, well, it'd be cool to hear [A] Elvis sing this
to Dr.
John [G#] is singing on a tune that Warren and I co [Gm]-wrote.
We [C] don't remember the pain.
[G] We [C] never do it again.
[G] Sin, [C] sin, sin, sin.
[D] And our fan base is growing and hopefully they will see us expanding and want to run with us.
I think through the years, Government Mule [E] fans really expect that to happen.
We put on a lot of big shows with special guests and Warren's really good at putting
together all these different artists with different songs.
It's a show.
A lot of people [A] come [E] nowadays to see our show and expect that.
Dunganwise.
[Em] Oh yeah.
Dunganwise.
Find yourself another fool.
[E] Dunganwise.
We've kind of taken a non-traditional [D] approach to everything we've done.
It works for us.
So that's kind of [A#] something we're proud of.
I [E] guess after the fact, we're [C] all hoping that it kind of brings some [G] people into the world
of Government Mule that have [D#] never really heard us before.
These songs, I think, kind of warrant that [C#m] in a way.
They all have their own personality and don't sound like anything we've done in the past.
And I think hopefully [F#] hearing another [D#] singer interpret them [F#] helps shine a light on the songs themselves.
And somewhere [D#] in that picture, people get a [F#] glimpse of what Government [D#] Mule does.
[C#m] [A] [F#] [C#m]
