My name is Inez Andrews and I came to the Caravans from Birmingham, Alabama.
I was working with a group called the Gospel Harmonettes.
I went to Tennessee to sing and Robert Anderson and James was on the program.
And James went back to Chicago and told Tina he had heard me.
And Dorothy Norwood and Avertina sent for me.
And I went up for what they called an audition and I haven't been back yet.
So I sang with the Caravans for about 16 years.
Then I got my own group.
Then I came back to the Caravans and the rest is history.
Here I am again.
I'll be back next time.
I didn't know I was supposed to be paid to sing until I came to Chicago
because I was singing in Alabama for nothing.
And I was writing songs and didn't know I was supposed to be paid for them
until Saturday morning and Raymond Raspberry came through.
I went to Atlanta to sing with them and I had written my first song,
No Tears in Heaven, and I couldn't sing what Raymond was singing.
So I sang it and the next time I heard it, Sally had recorded it and claimed it.
So that was new to me.
I didn't know I was supposed to get no money though, but I found out later.
Don't think I didn't tell her about it because I did.
But I'm grateful for what the group has done for me and with me
and I'm grateful to God that I'm able to be here tonight to even talk about it.
We've been out here a long time and we've seen a lot of changes and God has been good to me.
I've raised seven kids being out here and that is a blessing.
So a little bit of money took me a long ways.
And today the money that they are making, somebody had to pave the way
and I praise God that we were a part of that.
I know that [Fm] when I was out here every day, I was out here because I loved to sing,
[Ebm] not [G] because I was getting paid, because singing the [Db] gospel at that time,
you [Eb] had to love it, you had to be sincere about it.
And I praise God for where he has
