Hi, this is Gaylord again, and this time I [N] thought I'd show you how to do Danny O'Keefe's
song back from 1972, Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues.
Great song.
I had a request to do this song.
I don't normally do requests because I've got so many of the songs that I'm playing
in my band that I'm trying to get out here for you guys.
It's hard to do other ones, but, man, I may do this one in the band.
This is great.
This is a [G] good song.
Listen, instead of playing the chords on this, [E] what you want to do is hit the notes so that
you're doing, just picking notes on there and filling it in.
So here's [G] the notes that you're trying to hit, [F#] [E] [D]
[G] [Em]
[D] or at least that's what I'm hearing,
okay?
[G] So what you're doing is you're on the sixth string, third [E] fret, and use [F#] your ring finger
to come up to the fourth string, fourth fret, [E] second on four, [D] open four, [B] hammer on five,
open two, and then [Bm] hit your fourth string.
[F#m] [E] [D]
[G] You start that riff again.
[Em]
[D] [G] [Em]
[G] The only fingers I'm using, I'm using my middle finger to hit that bass [F#] note, and I'm using
my pinky to hit [B] that fourth fret, [Em] and then I come down with my index on the second fret
on four, and [D] I use it on the hammer too.
When I go [B] five, two, on the fifth string, open [D] two, and then [G] four.
[Em] [G]
[Em] [G]
[Em] [G] And what I'm doing to give it some [Em] full sound in there [G] is I'm playing the second and third strings, okay?
[Em] [G]
[Em] [G]
[Em] [G]
[Em] [G] [C]
Now what that is, I'm not sure what the name is.
I think it's a [Em] C major or something.
I'm not sure, but anyway, I'm not a chord guy.
[C] It's a C [Em] chord without the index finger, okay?
So maybe a C major seventh probably.
But a C chord without the index finger, and your notes [A] there, you're doing the same kind
of riff, [B] but it's on a open [A] two, two on [G] three, open three, and then that little run, or the
[Em]
hammer on four.
[D] Oh, two, [Em]
[G] and open three.
[C]
[B] [G] [C]
[B] [G] [D]
You kind of get up to a D7 there, okay?
And [Am] it's going to be important it's a [D] D7, not a D, because you want to position those
fingers, [E] your index finger one on [Am] two, and your middle finger two on three, because you're
going to do a little slide.
[Bm]
[C] [F] [Bm]
[G] [Am] And all I'm doing there, [Bm] going up two frets, [C] sliding back down, and taking my middle [D] finger off.
[C] [F]
[G]
And that little hammer on four to an open [F] three.
[D]
[G] And then [Em] start that riff [G] again.
[Em] [G]
[Em] [G]
[Em] [G] [C]
[Am] [G] [C]
[Am] [G] [D]
Oh man, I missed that.
[Bm] [D]
[G]
[Em] [G]
[Em] [G]
I hope that helps you.
I'm trying to think ahead, and I hit, missed my notes for you.
Hey, also, there's [D] that little break in there, the little break riff.
[G]
[Em] [G]
[Em] [G]
[D] [G] All I'm doing there, [Em] open first, [D]
[G] [D] [G]
[E] [D] that's a second string, [E] third fret, [D] [B]
open second, [A]
second
[G] on third,
[D]
that's that little hammer, and then [E] he goes,
[D] [Em]
[Bm] [Em] [D]
[E] I'm on the second string, fifth
fret and third fret.
[D] [E]
[D] [G]
[F#] And then you go back into that riff, but you're going to start on the second note of that,
so you're actually starting fourth [B] fret on the fourth string.
Didn't explain that [E] well, but.
[D] [G]
[Em] [G]
[Em] [G]
[D] [Em] [D]
[Am] [D]
[Em]
[G] [Em]
[G] [Em]
[G]
Hey, I hope you like that.
That's a great tune.
May the Lord bless you, and stay close to Jesus, man.
See ya.
Bye-bye.
