Ghost riders in the sky beginner Outlaws lesson for your 3 string Cigar Box Guitar chords
Start Jamming...
Hey, it's old Uncle Mark in the mothership again, three string cigar box guitar.
This is the beginner lesson for Ghost Riders in the Sky.
When I was in my late 20s, I was in, lived in Montana, actually it was my early 30s,
and I had a cowboy band and we used to sneak in some Rolling Stones tunes, because you
know I'm a classic rock kind of guy, but hey, cowboy music paid, Ghost Riders, Outlaws,
this was great.
Plus it's kind of old timey country, so it's got that [Db] aspect to [G] it, and it's western, so
we got throwing that in there, so it's you know, something really fun to juggle with.
So I'm going to play it electric, but you could certainly play it through an acoustic
[Gb] amp like the Marshall or a Fishman or you know, an Acoustasonic [G] Fender.
Play it any way you want, this is the beginner lesson.
So the chords are easy, G, [D]
D, [C] C, right, because [B] we know that G, [A] G sharp, A, [Bb] B [B] flat, [C] B, C,
here's the dot right there, [Db] [D] C sharp, D, here's the dot right [Eb] there, [E] D sharp, [Gb] E, F, [G] F sharp,
G.
[Eb] There's a E minor in this song, the song is in the key of E minor, and to make that E
minor easy, you put your [B] third finger here on the B note, [G] and then you put your finger
here on the E, [Em]
and that's it, here's the song.
You got a galloping [C] rhythm, [Bb] so it's a,
[Ab]
to [B] practice that it's a gallop, like a horse.
[Em]
[Bm]
You have to [Eb] practice that without any [Ab] sound.
[Eb] You can practice that while you're watching sports, [Em] you're, you know, March Madness or
basketball, pro football, baseball, whatever's coming up in [Ab] the season, watch the game.
[G] Practice that rhythm, you need that rhythm for this song, it lends itself really well
to that rhythm.
So we'll start the [Em] song, E [B] minor, remember, E [Em] minor.
And old cowboy went riding down a [G] G, dark and windy day,
[Em] A bobber in G risked it as he went upon his way,
But all at once a mighty herd of red-eyed cows he saw,
[C] Plowing through the ragged skies of C, and up a [Em] cloudy draw,
The rams were still on fire, [G] their hooves were made of steel,
Their [Em] horns were black and shiny, and their hot breath he could feel,
A bolt of fear went through him, as they thundered through the [C] sky,
Where he saw the riders coming home, and heard [G] their morning [Em] cry,
D, F, [D] B, I, O, A minor, [Em] B, I, A, [C] C, [Em] the sky.
[Ab] That is the whole song.
[Em]
So I'm going to go through, go through the notes that accompany this song,
they kind of telegraph the tune out, it's part of the part of the song,
and remember with your [E] notes you're still doing the [Bb] just the gallop, right?
[E]
[F] Practice this, [Ab]
[Bb] okay?
[D] So the notes are,
[E] [Bm] [G]
Oh,
[Em] [G] Big [E]
[Gb] [G]
jump now, from B to E, [Em] okay?
[D] [C]
[G]
So the notes in this song [E] are E,
[Gb] F sharp, [G] G, [E] E, [D] D, right?
[B] [G] [E]
[Gb] [G] [A] [B]
[G] [E]
[B]
[G] [E] [C] [G]
So normally [C] I would just get that, I would just lay down to get that note.
[G]
Right?
[D] So a little bit quicker.
[E]
[G] [D]
[G] [E]
[Gb] [G] Remember we're jumping to here now.
[E]
Back to [B] there.
[Em]
[C]
[G] [E]
Okay, you can do that throughout the song.
So I'm going to run through it one more time a little bit [D] quicker.
[E] [G] Here
[Gb] [G] [B]
comes the jump.
[Em]
[C] [G]
[E]
All [G] right, I think we're going to grab this real quick.
So you'll run through a lyric, you'll run through another lyric,
[D] Yippee-aye-oh, yippee-aye-ay, ghost riders in the sky,
[C] then you do that jam, then another lyric, and you can do it any way you want.
You can open the song this [D] way.
[E] [G]
Okay?
So you can telegraph the song [B] out in the beginning or just start with [Em] your
[G]
[E]
[G] [E]
[G] [E] [B]
[Em] [D] [C]
[G]
[Em] [E] So there's the chords that go with it.
I'm going to have a little advanced lesson after this,
just so that we can play around with some of these changes that I think are just fantastic.
