Hey, I'm Ken Carlson with Country Guitar Chops, and on this guitar lesson, I'm going to show
you how to play Reggie Young's version, or I say his version, how he recorded the guitar
part for George Strait's The Fireman, the classic.
I've been playing this song ever since it came out back in the 80s, and I never did
work it up like the record.
You know, I always did something, something my own style, but I always did want to work it up.
And just yesterday, I thought, I'm going to do this.
So anyway, and I'm really glad I did, because I learned a couple little tricks here that
I can incorporate into some of my other licks.
[Em] Especially, I mean, this solo right here, he did some really cool, kind of staccato,
choppy thing.
It's a cool little solo.
So let's tear it down.
[A] In the key of A.
Okay?
In the first half of that guitar solo was played by the fiddle, so he's vamping on the,
it goes from an A to an E.
[G]
[A] [G] [G] [A] [E] [C#m] [E]
Okay?
That's what he's doing there.
I'll slow that [G] down.
[A] I'm not playing it exactly like he did.
I've got the general [G] groove there.
[A] [G] [F#]
[G] [F#] [A] [F#m] [G] [F#m]
[F#] [C] [A] [C#] [D] [C#m] [E]
And he's got a little pause [G] there.
[E] One, [D] two, [E] three, four.
One, two, three, [A] four.
All one.
Coming in on the solo, we've got a pickup [G#] note.
Right down here on the fourth fret, [A] when we slide.
[A] All one, two.
We do a pull off.
Okay?
All one, two.
Come here on the B string.
Before I go any farther, I need to [G#m] mention, I forgot.
[Am] He played a strat on this solo as well.
And I didn't want to break out my strats, all the strings are old on them.
So, on my Tele's here, I've got the three pickup configuration like a strat.
So I'm in with a five-way switch.
I'm on one click up, so I've got these two pickups on, giving me that strat out of phase.
[C#] That's [A] the ending lick right there.
I'll show you that when we're done here.
Okay?
So we've got a strat tone going on.
All right, back to the lesson.
[E] [Am] Row one, two, pull off [A] on [D#] the [E] four.
Open [D] E.
[C#m]
[D] Okay?
And then [A] three and two.
And then we're going to lay our finger down, our index finger, and catch two and three.
Pull off of three to the open G.
[G] [A] Okay?
[G]
And then we're going to catch the open G again [F#] to [B] the fourth string, fourth fret.
[E] Second [D] pull off.
[E] Nope, I'm sorry.
That's not right.
[A] [G] [A] From the [G] [D] flipping off there to the open [F#] G to the fourth, [G] back to the open G, [F#] then again
to [E] the fourth, [D] second pull [C#] off, and then fourth fret of the A string.
So what we have so [A] far is, [G] [E]
[C#m] I think I kind of missed that.
I missed [Bm] one of those.
Let me play it a little more up to speed.
[Fm] Three, [A] four.
[G] [F#] [C#m]
[G#] Okay, that's how that would [A] sound.
[G] [E] [C#]
All right?
I'll have the tab.
If you're watching this on YouTube, I'll have the tab and a jam track for you to play along
with on my website, countryguitarchops.com, which you'll see in the description box below
here, to access all the free lessons.
And I've got a ton of them on there.
All you have to do is subscribe.
It's free to subscribe.
There's never any obligation to buy anything.
So hope to see you on the website.
Okay.
So, we're here.
Now the song [E] goes to D.
And what we're going to do here is pick B string [C] on the first [B] fret
and a [Am] pull off.
[B] [Am] Then there's a slight little [B] pause there.
And then we've got first string, second fret, pull off, [Am] open [E] B, [C] first fret, pull off.
[F#]
[E] [C] [A] And now we're going to come down here and catch the G string at the second fret, come
back [C] on the B string, first fret, [B] pull off.
[A] Catch [Am] this again [E] and again, [A] pull off.
So here's what we have [C] from the B.
[Am]
[A] From there, we're going to go.
Okay.
We're sliding this up to the sixth fret, [E] catching the E string [Am] at the fifth fret and a pull off.
Let's see here.
[E] [C] [B] That's [Am] [A] how fast that is.
Pick the open E again.
Remember, we pulled off.
Open E again to [D] the B, [C#m] three and [Am] two.
[A]
I missed it.
Again, the B string on the second fret and we do that roll again.
Pull off.
[Em]
[A] Okay.
[Em] Pick the open G again [A] to the four, two on the D string.
[C] Come down here on fifth string.
Again, catch [C#m] three, hammer on to four.
[A] Our index finger now moves up to the third string, second fret to resolve that lick.
So [G] [F#] [Am]
[A] to end it, slide that up to the sixth fret again and catch your A note, fifth fret, E string.
Okay.
I catch myself going, letting that ring and Reggie didn't do that on the recording.
He lifted that middle finger, stubbed that note when he hit the E note.
Okay.
I'll try to play this whole thing slow for you now.
[G] [D] From a [A] A.
[A] [Em] Two, [G] [F#] [A]
[E] [D] [E] three, four.
One, two, three, [A] four.
[G] [A] [C] [Em] [Am]
[A] [G] [F#]
[A] Okay.
I'll play along with the jam track one more [Em] time.
[A] [E]
[A] [Em]
[C] [A] [C] [A]
Okay.
As I mentioned, I'll have the tablature and a jam track.
I'll put a jam track together for you that you can practice that too.
I would also recommend doing something for the first part of that solo.
[E] And before I recommend anything for that, I told you I was going to show you how that ending lick.
That's [C#]
[Am] [A] how the very last lick of the song ends.
[B] So what we're doing, [C] we're on that third string, fourth fret.
Slide that up [C#] to the fifth and then catch your B string on [Am] the second.
[C#] [C] [A]
[C] All right.
[C#] Two, three, four, [G#m] one.
[A] [F#m] [A] [C#]
[A] All right.
[Em] So, yeah, like I said, I would recommend trying to come up [D#] with something like the first [A] half of that.
[D] [G] [A]
[F#m] [G] [E]
[F#m] [E] [D#] [D] [A]
[Em] I lost myself there.
But anyway, you get the idea.
Then I [A] came into that second [E] ride that Reggie did.
Okay.
I hope you enjoyed
[A] [Em] [Am]

[E] [Am] Row one, two, pull off [A] on [D#] the [E] four.
Open [D] E.
[C#m]
[D] Okay?
And then [A] three and two.
And then we're going to lay our finger down, our index finger, and catch two and three.
Pull off of three to the open G.
[G] [A] Okay?
[G]
And then we're going to catch the open G again [F#] to [B] the fourth string, fourth fret.
[E] Second [D] pull off.
[E] Nope, I'm sorry.
That's not right.

So we've got a strat tone going on.
All right, back to the lesson.
[E] _ [Am] Row one, two, pull off [A] on [D#] the [E] four.
Open [D] E.
[C#m] _
_ [D] Okay?
And then [A] three and two. _ _ _
_ And then we're going to lay our finger down, our index finger, and catch two and three.
Pull off of three to the open G.
[G] _ [A] Okay?
[G] _
_ And then we're going to catch the open G again [F#] to [B] the fourth string, fourth fret.
[E] Second [D] pull off.
[E] Nope, I'm sorry.
That's not right.
_ [A] _ _ [G] [A] From the [G] [D] flipping off there to the open [F#] G to the fourth, [G] back to the open G, _ _ [F#] then again
to [E] the fourth, [D] second pull [C#] off, and then fourth fret of the A string.
So what we have so [A] far is, _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ [E] _
[C#m] _ I think I kind of missed that.
I missed [Bm] one of those.
Let me play it a little more up to speed.
[Fm] Three, [A] four.
_ _ [G] _ [F#] _ [C#m] _
[G#] Okay, that's how that would [A] sound.
_ [G] _ [E] _ [C#] _
All right?
I'll have the tab.
If you're watching this on YouTube, I'll have the tab and a jam track for you to play along
with _ on my website, countryguitarchops.com, which you'll see in the description box below
here, to access all the free lessons.
And I've got a ton of them on there.
All you have to do is subscribe.
It's free to subscribe.
There's never any obligation to buy anything.
So hope to see you on the website.
_ Okay.
So, we're here.
Now the song [E] goes to D.
And what we're going to do here is pick _ B string [C] on the first [B] fret
and a [Am] pull off.
[B] [Am] Then there's a slight little [B] pause there.
And then we've got first string, second fret, pull off, [Am] _ _ open [E] B, [C] first fret, pull off.
[F#] _ _
_ [E] _ [C] _ _ _ [A] And now we're going to come down here and catch the G string at the second fret, come
back [C] on the B string, first fret, [B] pull off.
[A] Catch [Am] this again [E] and again, [A] pull off.
So here's what we have [C] from the B.
_ _ [Am] _
_ _ _ [A] From there, we're going to go. _
Okay.
We're sliding this up to the sixth fret, _ [E] catching the E string [Am] at the fifth fret and a pull off. _ _ _ _
_ _ Let's see here.
[E] _ _ [C] [B] That's [Am] _ _ [A] _ _ _ _ how fast that is.
Pick the open E again.
Remember, we pulled off.
Open E again to [D] the B, [C#m] three and [Am] two.
_ [A] _
I missed it.
_ _ _ Again, the B string on the second fret and we do that roll again.
_ Pull off.
_ [Em] _
[A] Okay.
_ [Em] _ _ Pick the open G again [A] _ to the four, two on the D string. _
[C] Come down here on fifth string.
Again, catch [C#m] three, hammer on to four.
[A] Our index finger now moves up to the third string, second fret to resolve that lick.
So _ _ _ [G] _ [F#] _ [Am]
[A] to _ end it, _ _ slide that up to the sixth fret again and catch your A note, fifth fret, E string.
Okay.
I catch myself going, letting that ring and Reggie didn't do that on the recording.
He lifted that middle finger, _ stubbed that note when he hit the E note.
Okay.
I'll try to play this whole thing slow for you now.
[G] _ [D] From a [A] A.
_ [A] _ [Em] Two, [G] _ [F#] _ [A] _
[E] _ _ [D] [E] three, four.
One, two, three, [A] four.
_ _ _ [G] _ [A] _ [C] _ [Em] _ [Am] _
_ _ _ _ [A] _ _ [G] _ [F#] _
[A] _ _ _ _ _ _ Okay.
I'll play along with the jam track one more [Em] time.
_ [A] _ _ [E] _ _
_ _ [A] _ _ _ _ _ [Em] _
_ [C] _ [A] _ _ _ [C] _ [A] _ _
_ _ _ _ Okay.
As I mentioned, I'll have the tablature and a jam track.
I'll put a jam track together for you that you can practice that too.
I would also recommend _ doing something for the first part of that solo.
_ [E] And before I recommend anything for that, I told you I was going to show you how that ending lick.
_ That's [C#] _ _
[Am] _ [A] _ how the very last lick of the song ends.
[B] So what we're doing, [C] we're on that third string, fourth fret.
Slide that up [C#] to the fifth and then catch your B string on [Am] the second.
[C#] _ _ _ [C] _ [A] _
_ _ [C] All right.
[C#] Two, three, four, [G#m] one.
[A] _ [F#m] _ [A] _ [C#] _ _ _
[A] _ All right.
[Em] So, yeah, like I said, I would recommend trying to come up [D#] with something like the first [A] half of that.
[D] _ [G] _ _ [A] _
[F#m] _ _ _ _ _ _ [G] _ [E] _
[F#m] _ [E] _ _ [D#] _ [D] _ [A] _ _ _
_ [Em] I lost myself there.
But anyway, you get the idea.
Then I [A] came into that _ second [E] ride that Reggie did.
Okay.
I hope you enjoyed
