Hi, I'm George [Bbm] Lynch with Dangerous Guitar [Eb] and today we're here with a wonderful Friedman
[C] amplifier that we're going to get familiar with.
[Bb] This is called the Dirty [A] Shirley.
It's a 40 [Db] watt [Gb] version of the [Eb] amp.
There is a 100 watt version as well.
[A] I prefer [Dbm] this amp.
It has a [Eb] very simple layout.
[G] It's [Gb] sort of a [Eb] clone of an offset [Gb] 63-64 [Db] Plexi [F] Marshall and it has [Gb] those kind of total [Db] qualities.
It has a lot [F] of sag to it, a [Gb] lot of natural compression, a [Eb] lot of headroom.
[F] It's not a highly overdriven amp [Gb] so it takes pedals really, [Db] really well.
Very sweet sounding, [F] very articulate.
Really good blues [Dbm] slash classic rock amp.
[B] As I said, it takes pedals really well.
[Ebm]
So you can crank.
What I've got here now is I've got the [Eb] gain crank on 10.
I've got the master down [B] to 4.
It's pretty much a one [Eb] trick pony.
[Db] It does one thing really well.
[B] So you [Eb] can fine tune the tone knobs [Bb] obviously to your liking but I found it really doesn't
make a whole lot of [Ebm] difference.
So it really doesn't [Bb] matter where I put these.
It kind of sounds the same.
I'm going to try this amp with [A] my Les Paul [Db] and then we'll switch to a Strat.
[Gb] We're going to [Eb] compare [Bb] with this amp, those [A] two.
[Db] So I'm going to start out on the [Bb] bridge position pickup [A] and just [Db] play some simple rock [Ebm] chords
to give you an idea of what the amp sounds [A] like.
[Em] [G] [D]
[A]
[Am] [E]
[A] [Am] [E]
[Am] Now I'm going to play some single note soloing with the Dirty Shirley to give you an idea
what that does on the Paul.
[B]
[D] [Am] [A]
This is one of my favorite amps.
[E]
Sonically, what I really love about it is it sounds very natural.
[Gb] It's always hard to describe tone in words because language is difficult.
One word means something to me and means something else to you.
But natural is a good word for me to describe what it does because what I think it allows
you to do is hear what your fingers are doing.
You can hear the fret board.
You hear what the pickups are doing and the amp doesn't get in the way because it's not overly saturated.
So you can hear all that articulation and especially dynamics.
So when you're pulling down the volume, you know, [A] you [D] [A] [E]
can bump it up a little bit and
you know, [E]
a little more [Db] saturation.
[Am]
[A] [A]
[N] A lot of expression.
You can get a lot of different kind of voicings within a small amount of notes just by the
way you articulate your pick and the way your fingers hit the strings and the way you hit the amp.
The way you hit the front of the amp.
The amp kind of reacts differently.
And I think it's really just a fascinating amp.
As I said, I prefer this way over the 100 watt.
I think there's a lot of things that the 100 watt doesn't do that the 40 watt does do.
So now we're going to try the Strat through the Freedom and Dirty Shirley with the exact same settings.
[Abm] I've got the gain max and the [Ab] master down to about 4.
And I'm going to do the same thing I did with the Les Paul.
I'm just [Abm] going to hit some chords, some basic chords and [Gm] do a little bit of riffing so you
can hear how a Strat reacts [Gb] to the Dirty Shirley.
