Well, my [G] goodness.
George, it's [N] such an honor to have you on this show.
When I found out that you agreed to do this show,
I did some jumping jacks, believe me.
I was so happy.
I love you more than anybody.
You're [G] just the best.
I was just thrilled to death to know that [D#] Elvis Costello
was in the show.
[F#] Well, he made a special trip.
[N] He's great.
And I'm just terrified.
George, who were some of your influences growing up when you were a kid?
Who did you listen to?
I don't remember.
You don't remember back?
Roy Acuff was definitely the first [B] that I heard on the radio
and got me to liking country music.
Roy Acuff and Bill Monroe.
And that's who I'd want to listen to if mama turned on the radio on Saturday nights.
And as time progressed, we got people such as Hank Williams Sr.
and Ernest Tubb.
And I loved them all.
I'll tell you, country music, real country music, I call it, [D] is what I love.
My mother is still the biggest George Jones fan in the world.
She loves your singing.
I love your mother very much.
She's precious.
I do.
It's funny.
Just a month or so before my dad passed away,
we was up there and I was getting ready to leave him.
I said, Dad, is there anything I can bring you when I come back up next week to see you?
And there's always been this little jealousy between you and George Jones
and my dad with my mom.
Because she always thinks you hung the moon.
She's just in love with George.
And I said, Dad, maybe I could bring you up some George Jones CDs.
You can listen to them.
And he went, [F] I had it with Jones.
Is that right?
[D]
But the first song I ever heard you sing, my mother went and bought this record.
And it's The Window Up Above.
You remember that one?
Would you sing a little of it for us?
I've been living a new [A] way of life [D] that I've seen.
But I can see the clouds are gathering
[A] And the storm [D] will wreck our home
For last night he [G] hugged you tightly
And you didn't [D] even show
It's true, hon, [A] I've been watching
[G] From that old window [D] up [F#] above
Thank you, George.
[F#] My goodness.
[D]
[G] This is going to work me tonight, I can see that.
The Grand Tour.
Step [B] right up, [Bm] come on in
[Bm] [G] If you'd like to take the grand tour
[C] I'm the one we want to call [G] home, sweet home
I have nothing here to sell you
Just some things that I will tell you
[A] Some things I know will chill you [D] to the bone
And [A] [D] over there sits the chair
[G] Where she'd bring the paper to me
Then sit down on my [C] knee and whisper
[G] Oh, I love you
Lordy.
[D] But now she's gone forever
[G] And this old house, [C] it will never be [G] the same
Without [D] the love, oh, that we [C] once knew
[G]
This is home
[F#]
[G] It's been a good year [C] for the rooms Yeah!
[D] Many of the rooms [G] still in use
The lawn could stand [Am] another mowing
[D] Funny, I don't [G] even care
And as you turn and [C] walk away
[D] As the door [C] behind you [G] closes
The only thing [Am] I know to say
[D] It's been a good [G] year for the rooms Yeah!
