Anderson, you know, one of the finest songwriters.
You've recorded several of my things for your
albums and I treasure those recordings because you're the kind of, I mean,
just everybody's favorite singer, one of everybody's favorite singers, and it's such an honor to have you sing something that I wrote.
It always bothered me a lot because, you know, you've written some of the biggest
songs that's ever been recorded in country music and other types too, I guess, but, and I always
figured, well, there was somebody a little bit bigger that you'd rather have the song, and I
wondered about that a lot, and I hated just come right out and ask you, but did you ever feel like
you should save a song for somebody with a little bit better name or something like that?
Did that
ever happen to you?
No, I don't think so.
I mean, it may have, but I don't remember it.
When I got
started, of course, that's been a while back, but I used to look for songs on, you know, back then
it was A and B sides, and I'd look for B sides, and I'd look for album cuts, and anywhere I could
find a song, that's what I looked for because I didn't figure that to get in touch with anybody
in Nashville, well, they was gonna send me some of their good songs, and so I would take chances
on songs that other people had picked out and chose to put on B sides or put down in an album,
and I just wondered if you were ever put in that position where, like, if I came up to you and said,
Bill, hey, I'd like to cut this song here, so-and-so told me about it, and you might think,
well, you know, I'd rather George Drake do this than Gene Watson.
No, no, I never felt that way.
You found Farewell Party had been cut before, hadn't you?
Oh, yeah, yeah, a lot of times.
Well,
you know, I recorded several songs that had been recorded several times, but like I say, a lot of
the songs I recorded had been recorded earlier.
But see, that's what a songwriter loves.
You cared
enough to go into those albums and listen to those B sides and seek out these things that were good
songs that had never been hits, and then when you gave them your interpretation, they became hits.
Well, I'd like to try to sing one, if it's all right, and I've got to tell you that I was at the
Grand Ole Opry one night, and I blame Jimmy Caps for this, but I was at the- We blame him for a lot of things.
I was at the Grand Ole Opry one night, and Jimmy told me, he said, man, he said, there's a song
that Craig Morgan recorded, one of his albums, and he said, you need to listen at it.
And I did,
and I [C#] was hooked.
I was hooked, and I recorded the song, and I'm not so sure I should have,
but I did anyway.
