Start Jamming...
This is the [C] number one base.
You can see that the neck is sanded down.
That's directly off the model base that I sell.
And I replaced the tuning pegs.
Once I had the [F#] tuning pegs, and we went back [A] and looked at the tuning pegs on the model that we're selling,
we're going to upgrade them for the next one.
[G#] On your old [C] original neck, most of that finish had been worn off just from years of
No, it was
It was there?
It was intact?
Yeah, it was intact.
Huh.
But I find it makes a great
it's just so
And it'll be interesting to see how that reacts in the humidity.
Uh-huh.
When you're playing outside on a sweltering day, and there's sweat all over your instruments Right.
It's a learning curve that you have to get through.
Right, right.
So I hope this works out, but it just feels so much easier to move up and down.
I have to say that this neck is a much faster neck than my original bass.
The original part is like
I'll use a kind of a
I don't know how to approach it.
Okay.
[G] And then when I play the main body of the song, it just goes back to simple [C] bass player stuff.
Uh-huh, uh-huh.
It's really
The boring stuff is easy to sing.
[G] Apart from meat and potatoes, man.
You gotta have it all, right?
Yeah, right.
But this
you were asking about my comfort zone.
This is the area [B] of the neck that I work in the most.
Uh-huh.
As we develop [C] songs and melodies, that changes.
Right.
It's funny when we go back to certain albums.
Yeah.
Do you realize we work on different keys?
Being [G] fortunate to have so many albums out,
the length itself really
I set really
there's a lot of different [A] range in terms of the keys.
Yeah, yeah.
I hope that makes it more [C] musical.
Right.
In the course of the evening, I'm cool with that.
Just drilling the same keys.
Sure, sure, sure.
The bass I use almost as often is this beautiful red bass
that the Fender Custom Shop made for me.
It's just a gorgeous sounding instrument.
Next slide.
Uh-huh.
And this actually made it on one of the tracks.
I'll save the space.
Uh-huh.
What's different about the sound?
It's hard to describe.
It's got a great bottom end sound.
The top [B] end is a little thinner, a little twangier,
but the low end is really very [F#] consistent and round.
[B] I don't think it's as big of a boost [G] as that.
My original bass has a bit more [C] gut and grunt to it.
It's a different kind of lower mid-range sound.
This is a little cleaner sounding, but it's a little deeper as well.
It's kind of a cool sounding bass.
Cool.
Here's the Pro11.
That's the Tribute bass.
You can see the great length they've gone to.
Every little crack.
Every little crack.
[B] I mean, that's crazy talk.
[G] But even like the Xiaomi bass that [F] doesn't have a badass bass,
[C] that doesn't have badass bridges.
Do you find that makes a [A] difference?
I do find it makes a difference.
Yeah.
I prefer [B] the sustain you get on the badass bridge.
And I add them on all my basses except this.
I'm not messing with this at all.
This was Jaco's bass.
This was not his exact bass, but [C] it's his concept,
and I pay tribute to that.
You can see how well rubbed in the, you know, he had the finish removed.
The old pegs are even distressed to feel like that.
And he's got precision knobs on the jazz bass, which are kind of funny.
I mean, he made this himself, I guess, when he made his own bass.
He pulled the frets out.
It's a fretted bass with the frets removed.
Right, and like an epoxy finish or something, right?
Is there like a different
I mean, I guess you'd have to see his original neck
to see how scarred up it must have been.
This is the fretted one he made, which does sound quite different.
But still a great sounding bass.
And I hope to use that in a future record when I need a different sound.
Right.
And the model basses.
I'm getting remodeled basses on this one.
Yeah, this is a custom shop version, and that's one of those that I use on stage. Cool.
So you can see it's a plethora of fenders.
Right.
