[C] [D]
[C] [N] [Am] Okay guys, now let's go through this lick and it's going to require a little bit of
speed picking, some aggression, loads of gain, loads of overdrive and then we will have the
Gary Moore sound or hopefully at least.
Now first of all, let me just put you in the picture.
We're in A minor, okay?
And I'm actually using a combination of the A minor pentatonic [G] shape [C] 4 and the A [Ab] harmonic
[F] minor,
[A] [Ab] [Am]
okay?
So if you're unaware of either of those two, you need to kind of first off take the sheet
and brush up on those two scale shapes, okay?
Because that's what we're using and that's a good combination that Gary Moore uses as
well as all [Em] your typical kind of blues breakers, Eric Clapton licks that he does on steroids,
super fast, super aggressive.
He also uses these two scales combined to create his own kind of unique tone.
So the first lick [A] is this [G] and what I'm doing is I'm just running up the [Ab] pentatonic, sorry,
the harmonic minor scale in A.
So there is the 13th fret, okay, on the G string and that's the raised [A] 7th to root note,
so [B] 14, then I've got my [Cm] 12th fret, [G] 13th fret, [Em] 15th fret and then [Ab] 12th fret.
[F] And [E]
then I'm going to [Bb] hit the 13th fret [E] again, okay?
So we go [F] and then I'm going to hammer [E] on and [G] pull off back to the 15 [Em] and back to the 12.
[E] So nice and slow [Am] [C] [G]
and [Fm] when you actually do it properly, there's a little bit of a kind
of steady rise in speed.
[F]
[E] You see I start slow and gradually get quicker, okay?
There's no specific tempo, don't worry about quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes,
whatever.
It's just gradually increase the speed,
[N] okay?
Now that's kind of the sound that you're looking for, nice aggressive attack with the plectrum,
okay?
And then for the second part of that [C] lick, it's this.
So this is some kind of speed picking stuff and what I'm going to do is I'm just going
to take the pentatonic shape 4 and go 13, [E] 15, [Cm] 13, [Am] [Gm] 14, [Em] 12, [D] 14, 12.
[C] So literally like this.
[Am] [Em]
[D] [Gb] [Em] [D] [Cm] Now the important part here is that you go [D] down, [Am] up, down, [Em] up, down, [F] up, down, okay?
[Em] [D] [Am] Because you want that consistency to your right hand picking to get the speed up, okay?
So down, up, [A] down, up, down, [D] up, down, okay?
[Am] Now that is quick [D] but [G] [Am]
[D] just do it at [Cm] whatever pace you're comfortable with for [Am] the moment
[D] and [C] then jump back to the 13th fret where you're going to bend.
[G]
Now an aggressive tone up and down.
[C]
When you get to the bottom, you're just going to really go over the top [Am] vibrato, almost
a 10-ditch style and then roll it off, okay?
So together, nice and slow, [F] [C]
[F] okay?
And all together,
[C]
[F] [Em] right.
So notice when I am doing this one, I've got my first finger behind to help me [C] focus in
on that vibrato and not just get a really weak sounding vibrato which I might get if
I do that.
That's just more comfortable for me.
Now there's your kind of lick.
Now in terms of developing speed, it's all about really knowing your pentatonic really,
really well.
[Bm] [Am] So that [Dm] finger movement needs to be [Em] nice and totally [D] understood.
[Em] [C] [G] So you need to [Cm] really do [Gm] that over and over and [Ab] over again until this hand [B] is not an issue.
And then it's all about just developing right hand alternate picking.
[Em] Now you can just do [C] that on two notes or [G] just one note and just try and get real control
over that right hand.
I'm picking totally from the wrist, not from the arm.
I'm not tremolo picking.
I'm just doing normal picking.
[Em]
And then gradually as you kind of open that up and develop it, this won't [C] seem like such a task.
[Em] And that hopefully will help you kind of get that Gary Moore vibe together.
So remember, aggression.
Aggression is the key.
If you're going to [F] do a bend, [C] make sure it's like that.
[Em]
You can hear as I play and I play and I play, I'm looking for more and more aggression.
Every time Gary Moore rolls off, he has to really roll his volume right off because otherwise
you're going to get this.
And this noise.
So what you're typically going to hear when you watch him play on the videos live is this.
So [F] he'll go and immediately roll that volume off from down here.
And therefore as he comes back in, you hear [D] that kind of quick burst of energy and then
attack on the note.
So there's your Gary Moore style.
It's really quick, so just really break it down nice and slow and best of luck with it, guys.
[N]
[G] [F]

Because that's what we're using and that's a good combination that Gary Moore uses as

so [B] 14, then I've got my [Cm] 12th fret, [G] 13th fret, [Em] 15th fret and then [Ab] 12th fret.
[F] And [E]
then I'm going to [Bb] hit the 13th fret [E] again, okay?
[C]

a 10-ditch style and then roll it off, okay?
So together, nice and slow, [F] [C]
[F] okay?
And all together,
[C]
[F] [Em] right.
So notice when I am doing this one, I've got my first finger behind to help me [C] focus in
on that vibrato and not just get a really weak sounding vibrato which I might get if
I do that.
That's just more comfortable for me.
