car from the end of the 70s and it consists of three nice respectable middle-class students from Boston
They're a part of what our American friends like to call new wave kids meaning bonds
Influenced by the velvets as I just mentioned it but also by the clash the Sex Pistols
Joy Division and Jonathan Richman.
They're so eclectic
They even dip into the perplexing of of that former professional avant-gardist turned professional rock widow
Yoko Ono for a version of the very deep listen the snow is falling or evocative or meaningful
or to say Rapido
[Bb] I wrote a poem on a dark biscuit [F] and your dog refused to look at it.
[Bb] So I got drunk and looked at your house pink over it.
[F] It was no bigger than a nickel.
[Bb]
Take one New Zealander and [F] two New Yorkers banish them to the clubs of Boston on a diet of velvet [Bb] underground and existential poetry
And the result is a curious mix called [F] galaxy 500.
Damon [G] and I sort of learned to play together
We had a friend who [Bb] couldn't get a date, you know, [C] so we figured if he was in a band he could get a date
[G] So he [Bb] bought us all instruments.
[E] Yeah, he was a wealthy friend then he got a date
But she was a Christian and then he became a born [G]-again Christian
And then he discovered that he [Em] couldn't have sex with her anymore and that he couldn't play in
you know devil worshipping music he had to quit and
[D] So that spot was was was vacant and [Am] left vacant for years.
We didn't play
Till Naomi took that spot
[C]
[D]
[Am] Dean Damon and Naomi formed [C] the band after graduating from college
Releasing their [D] first single the double-a-sided tugboat King of Spain in [Am] 1988
The [C] two-chord simplicity of their songs continues a tradition that began with the velvet underground and like the velvets galaxy
500 [D] have a take-it-or-leave-it attitude to their music
[Am]
We were just [Em] they were still looking for a way to play together
Just got interested in learning bass.
I [D] was really bored in school and
[A] Seemed like a fun thing to do.
So we just got together one [C] summer and just started playing but you know, no
Big ambitions just [Bb] you know having fun and it sounded okay, [Db] so we kept at [A] it
more fun than school
[Eb]
[A]
[Dm] Since 1988 galaxy [A] 500 have played regular gigs on Boston's [Dm] booming live club circuit
The city's heavy metal revival didn't deter [Dm] them from pursuing their subdued [A] dreamlike guitar rock
[Dm] We were new age kids [A] and we started out playing clash [E] covers and joy division and the Sex [Eb] Pistols
and a couple of [Bb] originals
[E] Quite political at the time.
This is pre galaxy 500.
Yeah
[Db] Since 1987 right [F] and then we started off with a different set of [E] covers Jonathan Richmond
stones velvet underground
[A] [B]
Between your head and [A] my mind
[E] The snow [A] is falling
Rooting through [E] a junk shop Damon and Naomi came across the Yoko Ono B-side listen
The snow is falling and being earnest minimalists decided to record their own version
[A] But they've no plans to cover more of Yoko's material.
[E] She's cool.
She's cool.
She's uncompromising
But [A] it's more we just found the record and [B] liked it and did it I wouldn't want to marry [N] her
I found a copy of fly and I listened to the whole [B] thing once, you know
[G] Well, it's a typical record listen to our [C] specter for making it but [G] we have been listening to
our share of
[C] like John solo stuff, you [G] know
By the summer [C] of 89 the band had signed a long-term deal with rough [G] trade records and had already completed their second [C] album on fire
Having opened the Glastonbury festival earlier this year playing to 30,000 people and with the release of their third album
[D] This is our music the band are confidently pursuing their distinctive sound it is [C] accurate to say this deliberately not some things
But that's just the way you go about making [D] any choice
But it's not deliberately anything I mean there's nothing that we we don't even know how to [C] describe it that's like
That's the question.
We hate answering most.
It's like what [Abm] type of music do you play?
What is what?
[Bbm] What type of band are you?
[E] Because there's [A] no answer.
It's really just a way to sell music.
[E] Well, they're anything else.
Yeah, it's a way to market it
