[A] [F#m] The American Mall, a bastion of consumerism and gluttony, once the go-to spot for bargain
hunting and hanging out, is now slowly being reduced to a ghost [Fm] town.
Over the years an increasing number of consumers have decided to opt out of travelling to their
local brick and mortar stores, in favour of taking full advantage of the ease and convenience
[A] of online shopping.
If this trend continues, the physical brick and mortar stores and shopping malls will
be relegated to a distant, nostalgic memory.
Some musical [D] artists have taken it upon themselves to recreate the experience of going [G] to the
mall, and this micro-genre of music has been dubbed Mallsoft.
Mallsoft is a sub-genre of Vaporwave that [Am] amplifies the easy listening aesthetic that
some Vaporwave is known for.
This is usually accomplished [N] by taking mall music, drenching it in reverb, and washing
the sounds out until you feel as if you're either walking through a virtual plaza, or
you're trapped in some abandoned mall in a lucid fever dream.
The genre was invented in the early 2010s, with the release of the album Hologram Plaza.
Most mallsoft is sample based, but there exists some non-sampled mallsoft music as well.
I'm going to try to steer clear of using music samples in this video, because I don't
want the headache of trying to skirt around the YouTube copyright system.
Let's get into the cook-up.
I opened up these roads in keyscape, and I have this MIDI file from my Wavy MIDI pack
that I think will work perfectly for a mallsoft type track.
It sort of sounds like the music they make you listen to when [F] you call tech support and
they put you on hold.

[Gm] I decided to pitch it up by 4 semitones, and I added some effects.
First I applied this ambient space preset in effect rack.
Next I added a low cut.
I applied a VHS effect to make the melody sound old and worn out.
And lastly I added a high cut [D#] to cut back on some of the static from the [A] VHS effect.
Here's what the melody sounds like now.

I applied this VHS effect, and I applied a low pass filter.

[A] [F#] [D]
[Bm] [D] [G] I added a bunch of sound effects just to add to the overall vibe.
I added some field recordings inside a mall, a [Am] cash register sound, and some old Kmart
PA [N] system announcements.
[G#] [N]
I opened up this bass preset and I just followed the bass notes from the melody.
I made this drum pattern.
[Gm] I applied a low pass filter and some reverb, in order to make the drums sound like they're
coming out of some distant speaker somewhere in the mall.
And I cut some of the lows with a mid side EQ to lessen the reverb from the kick.
Here's what the drums [N] sound like now.
[G#] [D]
As for the visuals, I'm probably just going to make some 3D text and after effects, and
then throw it over top of some mall [A] walk footage, and put a VHS effect on everything.
Well that's pretty much everything that goes into a mall soft track.
Let's see what we've come up with.
