I'm coming over.
I guess that's about the time that maybe from Sammy Dave to all of a sudden Percy Sledge.
That was soul music when Percy, I think.
Tell us a story in relation to this.
I was playing on Winamount.
I was a woman with Percy Sledge at Oregon.
I took a break and went out in the lobby.
There's a Billboard magazine.
Full page ad, VJ Records says the Beatles are coming.
I didn't know who that was.
That was a while back.
If that was a birth of soul, that was like 50 years ago, sort of.
I'm guessing you didn't know.
You couldn't have known at the time you were doing it?
No.
You couldn't have known the impact that was happening?
No.
You were the impact?
When Percy cut When a Man Loves a Woman, I was going to school at the university.
Jimmy Johnson was the engineer on it.
He came and said, we cut a really good thing last night on this guy, Percy Sledge.
I thought, wow, that's great.
Then I started hearing it on the radio really very soon.
I was here in this studio.
Quinn Ivey and Marlon Green, the producers on When a Man Loves a Woman, came in and asked me
if I wanted to play on the follow-up to it, which was Warm and Tender Love.
I said, sure I do.
That was the beginning of my recording career.
That's not a lot of beginning.
No, and it was a gold record.
All of a sudden I had to learn how to play because the phone started ringing.
I had to learn something besides my girl.
When a Man Loves a Woman was coming here?
I got a call and said, would you come play keyboard on this?
He's an orderly at the hospital.
I think this is his first recording.
It was the first session in the studio.
They just plugged in mics the first time.
They had this little shiny red Italian organ.
I'd never seen one before.
Farfisa.
I was going to say, Farfisa.
There's Roger Harkin on drums.
Jimmy Johnson back there, control room, going to engineer.
Junior Lowe on the Fender bass.
Percy's standing over in the middle floor going to sing.
We just started running the thing down.
First of all, I had never seen that.
There's a big old Ampeg amp over here.
I powered it up.
Powered this little organ up.
The red light comes on.
There's two little buttons.
One said multi-tone booster and another button.
The first button I pushed was like a thousand screaming bumblebees.
It was the awesomest sound I ever heard in my life.
I thought this isn't going to work.
I know this is going to be a soul record because it just appears that way.
The other button was the thing you hear on the record, a smooth, soft sound.
My heart fell into it in a good way at that point.
That was the first record out of that
