[N] Hi guys and welcome to the Lick Loft, my name's Rich, my name's Danny and today we've got
a couple of absolute stunners for you.
We've got the Fender Mexican Standard Strat and the new straight out of the box Fender Player Strat.
So we popped into Bonner's, which is our local store in Eastbourne, sunny Eastbourne, and
Mike and Tristan there just said look, check out these new Fender Player Strats, they're really nice.
So we had a quick play of them in the shop and we thought we've got to get these back
at the Lick Loft and give them a good comparison.
So we've chosen the Pal Faro fretboard models just to try and make the comparison as fair as possible.
So what's the reason for that, not rosewood isn't it?
It's the new CITES regulations where basically rosewood just isn't being used.
It's an exotic wood isn't it?
So you can't use it anymore.
They're protecting it.
So you've got a new sort of fretboard finish on there now haven't you?
Yep, so yeah, both the same on these.
And there's a couple of differences but quite a few similarities.
So if we start at the top and work our way down.
So tuning key is exactly the same.
You've got the new logo on the Fender Player Strat which really ties in with their sort
of American range.
It's that sort of spaghetti sort of logo rather than the filled in logo.
Yeah, because these are both Mexican aren't they?
They are.
Like I said, nut's the same, same fretboard, the Pal Faro.
The necks feel slightly different.
But they're pretty close.
They do feel nice, they're very smooth, very playable.
This is a new colour I believe in the range, Sonic Red, which is pretty cool.
Goes quite nicely with the dark wood as well.
Switch is the same.
With the pots, now they're putting this in which is really cool because this is a mod
that I always do to my Strat.
So they've wired the back tone pot to the bridge pickup.
You can just take that top end of that bridge pickup off which can be quite shrill sometimes.
Okay, that's quite handy.
I think the main difference is that the standard Strat has the ceramic pickup.
So they're quite bassy and quite full.
By no means do they sound bad, but some of the criticism has been that they're not quite
as stratty as some people would like.
So these are the Alnico pickups, very stratty, more traditional basically.
With the bridge as well, this has got the two point tremolo system instead of the six screw vintage.
So this again ties in nicely with their American series now.
And I believe that is pretty much it.
On the back you've got the nice little F logo which is found on the American guitars as well.
So as opposed to just a blank backplate.
Just a blank.
Just a nice little touch isn't it?
Yeah, we'll chuck some close ups of the guitars as well throughout so you can see what we're
talking about as well.
So what we're going to do is we're going to do a nice side by side sound comparison now.
We're not going to play anything fancy, just going to play some chords, some power chords,
just the things you want to hear so you can really [Ab] hear the subtle differences.
And let us know which one you prefer.
Cool, let's do it.

[C] [N] So Rich, what do you think?
Actually I don't think they're too bad at all.
Both models I actually quite like.
But if you had to sort of be that person and go you've got to pick one, it would have to
be the player for me.
I think overall tone wise this one's a little bit more clearer, a bit more defined.
This is great in sort of the neck area, the neck pickup area.
It's a bit more bassy.
Great for kind of rock punk sort of stuff, you know that kind of Waller sound kind of
thing going on.
This is probably a better pick than the player.
But saying that, this is superseding this model.
It is.
I love the colour on that as well.
It's sonic red wasn't it?
It's a really cool colour.
It's lovely.
It's just an off red kind of orangey.
But the entire range is available at Bonner's and we'll put the links below so check them out.
But like I say, you can't make a bad choice with this.
But let us know, which one do you prefer?
Right below.
