It's you know, it's a long story I am Felix Robinson and I was the bassist for Angel.
It was not the first bassist.
I
joined the band in
1977
[G] And I'm [Gb] flattered David you would remember [C] Angel.
I'm sure there will be people [A] looking at this at some point
It'll say well who the heck was Angel
And why does this guy deserve to [F] be you know interviewed regarding the bass?
[Gb] [F] But I know also there [B] are people
[Fm]
And thankfully there's enough of them out [E] there.
We've just had three albums re-released
on Universal [Fm] which is
We've we've always [Eb] maintained our publishing company and
Started to receive royalties again
Our records are now selling overseas [F] and which is an interesting [C] aspect of what Angel was we were a glamour rock band
in the 70s [F] and
The band started about two years before I joined it and there was as I said earlier another bass player Mickey Jones [E] great guy
My opportunity to join this band Angel came [Eb] in
summer of
1977
[F] And I'll be off on my date possibly by several months, but as I [Gb] recall I
had
[F] moved to Los Angeles
having lived and grown up in st.
Louis, Missouri and
And
And I moved to Los Angeles to
to further my career as a musician I
Realized having [Eb] been there once before on an album project as a [F] sideman
But that was where you needed to be at least at that point in time New York had had of course
Been the origin of so much in the music [Gb] business of course Nashville [B] [F] where we are now
Orleans [Fm] great music Mecca's in the United States
And I grew up at st.
Louis, which is [E] a terrific origin original place for [F] musicians
Are Terry and a lot of good good players so [G] my training had put me into [Db] situations where I could
[F] Work as a sideman and other bands
And my first trip to Los Angeles was with Phil Driscoll
Now do you know who he is?
He's [G] gospel artist back.
Then he was
[Gb] An emerging talent and [Ab] I played in [A] his band I played trumpet second trumpet I played guitar
[B] I played bass
[C] played piano
[G] And I've gone to Los Angeles with him and [N] recorded an entire album and a name A&M records
With Jeff Barry who was our producer?
Prior to that we've come to gone to Memphis and did an album with a fellow named Charlie Chalmers
At [F] Sam Phillips Studios, so in other words, I'm rolling around here, but I had had recording experience prior to joining angel
And I had moved to Los Angeles to [N] you know find opportunity as musician and
During the six months preceding when I joined angel I was in a band called the word
[F] And it was a original group four guys.
I think we were a fabulous group [Ab]
the
The gentleman I'm visiting while I'm here in Nashville was our drummer [F] his name is Gail Housen and he works for Reba McEntire now and
[Ab] I call him Housen and
[F] We had moved to Los Angeles together.
We [N] we got in my Mustang
65 Mustang and drove all the way out [Eb] there with our stuff and much as we could carry
ship the rest and
move to
Venice Beach
Where we started this band work?
[F] Our road manager our manager was the road manager for angel, so I'm tying it all together
So I'm playing in a band in Los Angeles
That's trying to get a record deal our manager is working [Ab] hard to get us a record deal
And at that [Bb] time of course he only had limited time [Eb] availability because he was the tour manager for this Rock Bay and [F] angel
which at that point was
Becoming very [E] popular.
[Eb] They had just finished their second album.
We're working on their third
[N] We're going on tour to Japan and we're considered the hottest new band
[Cm] mostly due to [N] the glamorous photographs and
Very hard-edged rock and roll album oriented rock had a great following
So [F] I'm playing in one band
My manager is tour managing angels [Ebm] tours and
[F] And I'm getting to know the guys in angel there were social opportunities.
We would
Get together at barbecues at [Gb] picnics
Where they would be invited because of this relationship?
and
And [N] I actually had a chance to start writing material with funky meadows and Gregg's freedom
the [F] guitarist and keyboard player and
[A] And so I'm giving you the whole history.
It's great.
We we [Eb] started writing material and ended up on the fourth album
[Gb] They
Were having problems with keeping Mickey Jones
Active as a musician.
He was very [F] important to the formative [Gb] stages of fan in terms of its image [F] and
the direction
[Ab] but had
You know not [Eb] become that active and wasn't participating as much as he could have in the creation of music
I
Think Greg [Ab] asked if I would be willing to write music with them
[Gb] I'm in preparation for this record [Eb] because the other bass player was not available
He was off doing something else and they needed a third instrument
[Bb] And so [E] I started writing
[B] [Eb]
[D] [Eb] And and we got along really well I was not
Star struck I was trying to make sure I had a [A] great opportunity to you know
[Ab] Be a musician and I was living [Abm] in Los Angeles was very poor [G] didn't have a lot of money
[Ab] but every opportunity I could find I [Eb] was very aggressive with it and [A] that might be helpful [Gb] for a lot of reasons for musicians or
[Eb] Hearing old guys like me talk about our career and wondering well, how did you get that job?
[Fm] What happened?
And for me it was preparation beats opportunity
