[C#m]
[Bm]
[C#m]
[A] [Em]
So, [F#] after two hours [G] on a train [G#] [B] from Shinjuku, Tokyo [B] toI
can't even pronounce the name
of this town.
[A] It came from Osaka.
[G#]
And we're [D] on our way to the forest, which will be neat.
It took us about two and a half, maybe three hours total after [N] this ride to get there,
which would be a long time.
But there's Mount Fuji.
It's pretty.
[F#]
It's pretty.
[C#m] [Bm]
[C#m] [E]
[N]
Thank you.
Okay, so we just arrived at the forest.
There's like a souvenir gift shop over there.
And so, a little bit, I guess, backstory on the Okigara Forest, aka the Suicide Forest.
It kind of feels weird calling it that, but that's like the name.
If you search it on Google, that's what it is.
Vice did a documentary thing on it and all this stuff.
But essentially, the past ten years or so, they've been finding this is a really common
place for, I guess, young Japanese people to come and kill themselves for various reasons.
And the numbers have been rising over the years.
They said last year it was estimated that they found about 200 bodies or remains of bodies.
And so, it's been kind of drumming up a lot of talk on the internet because it says that
the forest is haunted, which I guess is like a pretty, I don't know, it's a pretty plausible
thing to say considering how many people die in this forest.
And at least in this stretch anyway.
I mean, I think this stretch is only like 10 or 15 miles or so.
Apparently, it snowed, [Bm] so all the paths are pretty fucking icy right now.
[A]
[Bm] And look, look.
[G] We found a car that's totally buried by the snow.
[F] Not a good sign.
[Bm]
[F#]
[D#] Okay, we're gonna walk for like two or three minutes and then we're gonna turn back because
it's gonna start getting dark.
[G] It's cold and I'm not trying to get caught in a haunted forest after dark.
We don't believe in ghosts, so this definitely [F#m] could be scarier.
[F#]
Yeah, I mean, could you [A#] imagine being out here [A] and like being superstitious?
Like, [B] oh man, I just stepped in a huge pile of snow.
I don't know.
I'm kind of nervous being out here just because like, what if you did get lost?
[C#m] And like, it's just kind of creepy thinking about [F#] all the bad things that happen out here.
[C#] What I'm looking for [Bm] is this thing I see in all the documentaries, which is this like
fenced off part that says you're not allowed to go into.
And I'm not trying to go into it, but [G] it's just kind of the part where everyone either
goes camping or is like on the fence about suicide.
So they like, pretty much they all go past [Am] that point and there's these ribbons that
are [G] all along the trees that pretty much show people who go into the forest but think [Em] they
might want to come back out so [Bm] they can find their way back out.
It's really clever.
I'm not seeing any ribbons here because either we're not deep enough in or the snow [N] has covered them.
So.
[F#] Okay, I'm not seeing it.
Let's turn [A] around.
And not, and hopefully not get lost.
There's only one big path.
So I [G] find it, it would be pretty tough to actually [D] get lost not going this far [C#] in.
Yay, civilization!
[Bm]
We made it!
[C#] So I guess what I took away [A#] from this experience [B] going into the forest, [G] like something like
that, a lot of people, you know, obviously [F#m] said it was haunted, all [D#] this crazy stuff.
I don't believe in any of that.
[A#] I don't believe in ghosts.
I don't believe in anything spiritual.
[F#] So I think ultimately, it's just kind of [D] sad.
[C#m]
[F#] Please consider your parents, [F] your brother, your children.
[G#]
Please call [F] us.
Yeah.
Search me.
[A#] So it's a number of [N] suicide hotline.
Huh.
[G] They're kind of sad that this place has become kind of a tourism [A] spot because of all the
[C#] suicides and all the press that's been going on over the past couple years.
[Bm]
And he [B] told us to tell all of you that this [D] area is incredibly beautiful, [G] which it is.
[D#] And it's [G#] a shame that it's kind of [B] turned into, at least has the stigma it [E] has now.
Oh man.
[A] This is sad.
But we're now [A#] waiting at the bus stop [Dm] to get out of here.
He was really nice.
I just want [F#] to make a note that like everybody here in Japan has been incredibly, incredibly
nice [G] to us.
And they're very polite.
And even the guy, I assume he works here.
He was very forward with just [G] kind of talking about it and kind of the troubles he's had.
So yeah, it's pretty cool.
I did a little bit of reading on the bus ride [N] home and I found out that the movie The Forest,
which was out like literally a month ago in theaters, is about the suicide, or like Japan's suicide [C#] forest.
She went into the forest.
[G#] I want to hire a guide.
No guide.
Forest is very [D] dangerous.
And it has an 8% on Rotten Tomatoes.
I didn't [B] see it.
Apparently [N] $21 million worth of revenue.
So apparently some people did see it.
And apparently it's awful.
I think the biggest travesty out of this is that they tried to make a horror movie out
of it, which was like a really interesting concept apparently, and they failed miserably.
So I don't know.
I'm not sure how I feel about that.
So anyway, this has been quite the thing.
But stay sad.
