It's a band that
really doesn't need any introduction.
You just saw their video.
We're gonna get
into the [Bb] interview right now.
Where did the name Redbone come from?
Redbone's taken from the French dictionary and it means half-breed.
Anyone with an eighth blood, Indian blood, in [Gbm] no [Bb] matter where they are. _
_ _ You [Em] know
because half-breed of course is a derogatory.
_ [N] Half-breed.
So Redbone is perfect for our
situation being the first in original Indian rock group.
Our roots are Cajun,
which a lot of our music shows it.
You know, Witch Queen of New Orleans, _ _
_ Crazy Cajun.
It's got that original Cajun thump and it's [Ab] got the
Indian heartbeat, that constant driving thing at the bottom.
[C] That makes our music, you know, unique
unto itself and therefore, you know, we feel that and we're very happy and proud
of the fact that we are original.
You told me that your grandfather greatly
influenced your music.
How?
Yes, our grandfather had a great influence [N] on us.
He was born in Texarkana and he played around the New Orleans area for years
and he had different bands with all different kinds of Cajun musicians.
And when we grew up, we grew up listening to that kind of music.
And it had a very lasting influence on us and [Ebm] we appreciate it very [G] much.
Where was Redbone [N] originally from?
Redbone's from, originally from Los Angeles, from the West Coast.
We're native Californians.
Can you tell us a little bit about your first hit songs?
Well, the very first hit we ever had was our very first, it came out of our very first album, I'll tell you the truth, because we had a lot of success in Europe.
[D] Our initial success was in Europe.
As a matter of [C] fact, in Liverpool.
_ A lot of our music really took off in Europe.
We had like a number one records all across Europe.
We had The Witch Queen of New Orleans was number one all through Europe.
Come and Get Your Love [Dbm] was number one all throughout Europe.
Maggie, Crazy Cajun, Witch Queen of New Orleans.
I mean, _ just almost everything we recorded [A] was a top ten record in Europe.
England's like that.
Europe is [B] like that.
They hang themselves onto American groups.
Yeah, if they like it, if they like you, I mean, they're with you forever.
We have some great fans in Europe that we're real happy [D] with.
And it [G] slowly worked its way into the US and the rest is history.
You've written a lot of songs for other artists, like who?
Can you name a few for our audience?
Well, we wrote [B] Nicky Hokey has been recorded 150 times by [Db] _
[G] _ _ everybody _ from Aretha Franklin, Bobby Gentry, Burton Cummings, Tom Jones, Ellie Grenwich, [Eb] Henry [E] Mancini, Tonsi, all the way to [Em] Montenegro, Monteverde, [A] [Bb] some really heavy dudes.
_ _ But we've had many, many, many songs recorded by other artists.
[G] And originally, [Ab] that was the way we entered the business as writers and as session [E] musicians.
