Excellence Matters - Nigel Hendroff chords

[Bm]
[A] [D]
I think excellence is a good word.
I think sometimes [F#m] people in church [Em] can shy away from
[F] the word excellence because it can be mixed up with showiness.
But I think excellence
is good.
We serve an excellent God.
So [E] I think it's okay.
Excellence is bringing your best
today.
Now my best as a guitarist who's been playing for almost 30 years is going to look
different to someone who's been [Em] playing for six months.
So if I'm still bringing [F#] my same
three chords after all this time playing, I don't know if that's my best.
Do you know
what I mean?
So excellence is bringing your own best, my own best at that time, not yesterday's
offerings or what I hope to do one day.
It's bringing your best today.
And I think excellence
is a moving target as well.
I think you need to set yourself goals that you can gauge your
progress.
[D#] You know, the Bible talks about, if I can [Em] just [G#m] go there, like in Psalms, it
talks about, sing to the Lord a new song, play skillfully and [F] shout for joy.
You know,
there's joy in bringing skill.
There is joy in bringing excellence, bringing [F#] your best.
It says, sing to him a new song.
I think when you work at your craft and you're constantly
trying to come up with something new and you're growing, you know, when you learn a new lick,
you think, oh, that's great.
I'm going to use that here and I'll use that there.
There's joy
in bringing new, something new.
And I think it's important for all musicians is to have a
holistic approach to your craft.
Learn your theory, get good at gear, get good at tone,
and learn your stuff.
Know your stuff because it helps you, like I said before,
it helps you communicate better.
So it's like you have this whole vocabulary, but you know when to
use it, when to speak [F] and how to speak and what to say at the appropriate times.
[G] So you may have
this awesome lick, but you may only use it 1% of the time, but at least you know when and where to
use it [C] because you've worked with it in your bedroom.
You know what I'm saying?
